There are just so many NFL legends (including Cowboy legends) to chose from.
Side Bar Observation: Doesn't anyone find it sickening how some fan's hatred can prevent them from mentioning the rich pool of Philadelphia Eagle legends out there?!
I know I'll get busted out for saying this, but it's just so rediculous how blind some fans can be! Pardon the interruption ...
Well, you know, Philadelphia Eagle great Steve Van Buren hails from these parts, being a graduate of LSU-Baton Rouge, just many of us weren't old enough to have watched him. The same goes for Norm van Brocklin. He was a coach when I was 10, and I'm pretty old by this board's standards (47).
As far as the current team, they suffer from two problems, a boring offense to watch (sorry, but the 5 yard dink pass doesn't do anything for me personally) and generally crap skill position players. The running backs aren't used as runners primarily, and the receivers are at best, a mediocre lot. TO may be great but I'd just as soon shoot him as watch him.
On defense, pardon my saying, but the real star there is Jimmy Johnson, whom I do respect. The rest seem to be average-to-good players molded into a team by a dynamic coach. The collective is interesting; but no one individual defensive
player for the Eagles excites me.
Getting to Eagles I've paid attention to over time..
I saw RB Wilbert Montgomery in his freshmen year in college in the NAIA championship and I followed his career throughout. He was a dazzling college runner and a decent pro. I think he's coaching these days.
I was a big fan of LB Jerry Robinson of the Eagles. He was incredibly fast, had exceptional range.
I didn't like Jaws as a player but as an announcer I think he works hard and gives you his money's worth.
Donovan McNabb: I think he's a little overrated as a passer. He needs real work there. His running skills are excellent for a QB; you would have to be named Michael Vick to get even close to him. In terms of game management, I'd have to say he saves a lot of games with his feet. Overall I'd say he's a good but not great quarterback. However I think he makes his real mark as a person. He appears to have enormous patience and real integrity, and appears to be a thinking man. Those are virtues I admire. So yes, I like him.
Back to players I actually liked, non-Cowboys:
Phill Sims and Joe Morris: I always thought Phil Simms was underappreciated and a class act. Joe Morris, well, he was the little engine that could for the 1986 Giants. Seldom get a team get so much from so undersized a player.
Earl Campbell: The unstoppable force; defined for me the idea of power football.
Kellen Winslow Sr: glue for hands. God, the San Diego Miami games and the way this guy would play!
Terry Metcalf: The dagger that would kill you with the Cardiac Cards. I was more afraid of what this guy would do than anyone else.
I live in Atlanta so I have to mention 2 Atl Falcons players I've liked watching:
Jamal Anderson: power running and Don Reeves. Good stuff
Michael Vick: sorry, I know his passing is ordinary, but he is a terrific player to watch.
