this one is called NOW by an underground artist with a college degree. he rhymes words that most guys wouldn't attempt to use in a sentence much less a song. it is about his dislike of the corporate 'machine' if you will and the herd mentality of Americans. very talented but not for everyone.

i suggest you open this link to the lyrics page as you will need them to know what he says unless you listen to it multiple times

Fall of the Peacemakers by Molly Hatchet. Has so many underlying references that I have always loved it.

Ballad of Curtis Loew by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Great story song.

I'm not sure what my favorite 'unknown song' is - but I'm pretty sure it would be one by the band Alice Donut. Add one part Jane's Addiction to one part Dead Kennedys - with an occasional hint of the brass section from Chicago (not kidding)... and that's AD.

Just about anything from their 1989 album Bucketfulls (sic) of Sickness In an Otherwise Meaningless Life flat out rocks. Not much on youtube for Donut... Here's a couple:

Or, check out their more recent 2006 CD, Fuzz (the youtube video of their animated 'Madonna's Bombing Sarajevo' is fairly disturbing - but way cooler than any crap they show on MTV). I wish I could have found a decent youtube vid for The Puny and Revolting Men of Advertising Smile)...

Not as 'nobody heard of' as Alice Donut - but still under-appreciated...

"Modern Day Romance", by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band...

"Speed of the Sound of Loneliness", by John Prine, as sung by Nanci Griffith (with Prine duetting on the chorus)...

"Banana Republic", and "Coast of Marseilles", by Jimmy Buffett...

This is my favorite by Chris.

Back in the 70's , when Chris was still rodeoing and before he made it in country music--you could buy his 8track tapes thru rodeo sports news..
That's all we listened to when we where rodeoing back in my younger days.
Great songs -great lines like -"Flying high on caffeine and Copenhagen and breathing that cool night air and Tight Levis and yellow ribbons will make a cowboy swim a river that before he jumps he knows is way to wide...great bull riding and roping music.

His newer music was good -but I still like the old stuff

Most of these are (or were at some point) extremely popular songs that I'd bet most Americans over the age of 20 have heard.
