Cowboys TE4 battle may oddly be decided by UDFA FB Hunter Luepke

The Cowboys generally like to keep four tight ends on their roster. A tight end can be an extra run blocker, an extra pass protector, a receiving threat and, at times, even a lead blocker.

But one player could disrupt their ability to keep a fourth TE in 2023

In my opinion, think both will make the final roster. MM had success using a FB in GB. Luepke is one of those jack of all trades, master of none. He was getting a ton of time with the first team offense in the OTA's, which suggests they have big plans for him. As for Mckeon, he oddly has the most experience out of the positional group. If they want to play more 12 personnel, they are going to need a deep group at the position.

I think they'd *rather* that Hunter worked out. Gives them more flexibility, and they already have 3 TEs long term to develop.

Also, there's a sleeper TE. Bostick for short yardage. Half his career til now was as a TE.
I agree, iif he can do at least what McKeon does as the 4th TE, then he gives them more, since he can run a little too. if he can be that H-Back role a little, then it allows them to create more mismatches.

I think Luepke comes away with the roster spot. He's a Swiss army knife, RB. H-back. TE. If he shows up on special teams you should win this going away. I'll be rooting for him and what he can possibly bring to the table.

4 tight ends with a fullback seems excessive.

Realistically how many snaps do they plan on giving Luepke in order to justify giving him a roster spot? Same goes for McKeon….

We're about to find out if Luepke can live up to his potential, but he could be on the field for a far higher number of snaps than a 4th TE. McKeon plays special teams too though.

If they try to pass Luepke through waivers they will lose him, probably to the Patriots.

I think the idea that Luepke can do a lot of different things should help him in any competition. I could definitely see it boiling down to him or McKeon for a spot.

It will depend on how many backs they decide to keep, will the FB be apart of that?
That's a fair point. Luepke could potentially cost a 4th RB a job rather than a 4th TE.

Hard to say that so definitively. After all, neither the Pats or any other team thought enough of him to draft him, so their interest in picking him up if the Cowboys tried to slide him to the practice squad may be dependent on what he shows in preseason,
