1. Tashard Choice is a more valuable RB to the Cowboys than Felix Jones. Jones is apparently made of glass. Anyone who saw a couple of the moves he put on last night had to be excited, but I swear...every time the guy has a decent play and gets tackled at the end of it, he gets up slowly and limps off the field. Jones doesn't look to be a guy who will become an every down back...he doesn't even get hit hard, but he just comes apart...it's very frustrating. Those who wanted to argue with me last week that he was better than Reggie Bush? Sorry...and now we see why he isn't in the passing game. He can't block very well, so it would appear that's why Choice had been the 3rd down guy the first two weeks.
I love Felix Jones, but even as a change of pace back, if he can't hold together better than he has thus far in his career, that's a first round pick that will disappoint in the long run. Choice, on the other hand, is a very valuable commodity...here's a guy who's been the final man standing twice already in his career, and he delivers again and again as a runner and receiver. This guy gets every possible yard out of a play and has great vision "in the hole", darting here and there into before unseen little gaps and openings while Felix often runs into his blockers and has to start again.
Don't get me wrong, Felix Jones brings something to the table that Barber and Choice do not...but right now, the way Felix Jones seems to get dinged every time he's in the game for any significant action, I'd rather see him on the shelf than Choice. Choice is a critical guy for the Cowboys because when Barber goes down for a game, a stretch of games, or even the season, I have total confidence in Choice. If Felix was the only healthy running back left, I'd be worried about our season...I have a feeling the coaches would be as well.
2. I will continue to ask, "What's wrong with DeMarcus Ware?" until I get an answer. After watching him last night, closely for the first time this season, it seems apparent that he's not the same guy, and it has nothing to do with getting double and triple teamed....he was controlled by the OT alone most of the game. Watch the tape again, focused on him if you weren't last night. On many plays, he just stands there looking at the OT when he sees the guy has position on him...it's almost like he doesn't have the same motor as last year. Tell me this, forget about the pass rush, when was the last time you saw Ware make a tackle across the field or hustle downfield and smack the ball carrier or receiver from behind? IN the past, he seemed to be all over the field, not just pass rushing...he seemed to have a motor that wouldn't stop and he would not be denied...he was making tackles everywhere. Here's another point to consider: last year it was frustrating when he would get those offsides calls because he was getting off the ball so quickly, anticipating the count, and the talk was about whether he was actually offsides or so quick the refs were blowing it....last night he seemed like he was usually the last guy to even move when the ball was snapped. He was back a little and he just wasn't quick off the ball at all...and for a guy who relies on speed to get to the QB, that's not a good sign.
So what's up with him? Has he made an effort to slow down and avoid the offsides call? Is he injured? Is he leaving his wreckless abandon at home until he gets a new contract? If you think I'm crazy, rewatch the tape...Ware was late getting off the snap most of the night. He just doesn't look like the same guy. Victor Butler?....forget the fact that he got the 2 sacks at the end, just watch how quick he got off the ball to beat the OT...you'll think it's Ware from last year.
On a side note....I said this was going to be a very tough game. No team wants to go 0-3, and Carolina has the talent to give you fits when they are focused...that was a great win and a great 2nd half performance. Flozell finally got his falst start penalty this year, and he got called for a legit, but ticky-tack, holding call last night. Still, Adams dominated his man most of the night and didn't let Peppers do much of anything...he really blocked well and should be recognized for it.
Thank goodness we have a backup running back like Tashard Choice, and thank goodness we have an OLB like Ware, but whatever's wrong with DWare, I hope it gets better, or it's going to be a long year and there won't be any discussion about him being the best defensive player in the league this year because through 3 games, he's certainly not producing.
