This takes into account special team scores, safeties, and returns against the offense when the defense isn't on the field.
True.
But that actually hurts SF and Dallas when it comes to teams in the current Top-5 Total PPG given up:
1. Baltimore has a PR for a TD
2. KC has a Pick 6 accounted to them
5. Bills has a PR for a TD
With Baltimore and KC already ahead of Dallas that does not change. But if we removed Non-D TDs given up, Dallas would drop to #5 they were only ahead of the Bills by 0.2 PPG, but be 0.7 PPG behind if you just removed 6 points (I have no idea if the XP was made or missed).
So even in the original Tweet/X/Whatever, they have the Bucs over the Bills even though the Bils gave up a ST TD, but TB has 0 non-Defensive TDs scored against them. The only reason "TB has less total points scored against them" than Buffalo is because the Bucs have had a bye week, and the Bills have not.
Maybe you can make a case for the Browns to move up, since they are the only team in the Top-10 for Total PPG that have given up multiple Non-D TDs (FR and P6), but again, they also have had a Bye already, whereas the Ravens, Chiefs, 49ers, Bills, Saints and Falcons (all ranking above the Browns in total PPG) has not.
In any case, using "Total X stat" for a stat comparison during a point of the season where ~1/3rd of the teams have played 1 less games than ~2/3rds of the League is ignorant at best, and deceitful at worst.
It's an obvious advantage for Offenses that have not had a bye week yet. And it's an obvious disadavantage for Defenses that have not had a bye week yet.
Just pointing it out.
