First on the draft in general:

5 high picks most likely to bust- Jemarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Ted Ginn, Aaron Ross, Levi Brown

5 safe bets to be good to excellent players- Patrick Willis, Laron Landry, Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Nelson

now on to us:

if we stay at 22- I dont think we will, but if we do my wish list is Revis, Nelson or Meacham...its certainly possible all 3 will be gone

players I'd trade up for- really only one within reason, and he has to fall a bit...Adrian Peterson...I wouldnt sacrifice the majority of our draft to get him, but if we can get him in the 9-12 area and get something back for JuJo I'm definitely ok with it

if we trade to lower into the 1st rd- Spencer, maybe Meriweather, maybe Branch...Bowe

if we trade out of round one into early 2nd- Jarrett, Spencer if he falls out of first rd, Meriweather, Staley, Blalock or Grubbs

later in 2nd- S Rice, Sears, Woodley, Houston, Weddle

mid to late 2nd day potential picks- Sartz, Waters, Bushrod, Gutierrez, Korrodi, Gaddis

I do think we'll draft a QB at some point

players I absolutely dont want in round one- any OL, any QB, any TE, Ted Ginn, either Texas DB, no DE unless its someone like Spencer late in round one who can be moved to OLB

wont be surprised if- we do something like 2004 and trade into 2nd rd, picking up a #1 next yr

will be surprised if- we draft Marshawn Lynch...

ultimately we're in good shape...we dont have any glaring holes and barring something really stupid our draft should be fine

Ted Ginn won't bust, he'll be exactly what everyone thinks he will: One of the best kick returners ever who will be a career #2/#3 WR

If we don't take Merriweather at 22, all the talk up here is the Eagles will, they love him.

Just a question, how long is the average career of a KR or PR? How long do you see him in the NFL before he loses one step? After he loses that step he must be able to add something else to the team. Thus the reasons I'm against a special teamer in the 1st round. ie. Kevin Williams added alot his first couple of years but as soon as he lost a half a step it was over. Ginn will be an exciting player every time he touches the ball but for how long and is it worth the 1st pick?

Hitching all of your hopes on Dallas taking one specific player (whoever that player is) will almost certainly end badly for you.

That goes for you Ginn/Jarrett obsessers too.

Excellent post Davis.....

I agree I would not mind trading up for Adrian Peterson although I do question his durability. As long as we don't mortgage Valley Ranch to get him ...do it.

Whether it be a WR, CB, OL...I feel we will get a good player that will challenge for a starting position.

One thing for sure Saturday will be an interesting day.

Agreed. QBs are a given to be a high possibility of being a bust though.

There's no such thing as a safe bet when it comes to the draft. Period. And if there were, those wouldn't be the players on my list (except for CJ)

now on to us:

if we stay at 22- I dont think we will, but if we do my wish list is Revis, Nelson or Meacham...its certainly possible all 3 will be gone

Meacham is the only one I agree with and I'm sure better players will be available.

players I'd trade up for- really only one within reason, and he has to fall a bit...Adrian Peterson...I wouldnt sacrifice the majority of our draft to get him, but if we can get him in the 9-12 area and get something back for JuJo I'm definitely ok with it

Sounds reasonable. As long as we don't give up TOO much.

Agreed.

if we trade out of round one into early 2nd- Jarrett, Spencer if he falls out of first rd, Meriweather, Staley, Blalock or Grubbs

Agreed with all except Blaylock. I doubt Staley ends up a second rounder though. Same for Merriweather.

later in 2nd- S Rice, Sears, Woodley, Houston, Weddle

Eh.

mid to late 2nd day potential picks- Sartz, Waters, Bushrod, Gutierrez, Korrodi, Gaddis

Ok.

I do think we'll draft a QB at some point

Possibly. Wouldn't mind Stanton (?) in the 3rd.

players I absolutely dont want in round one- any OL, any QB, any TE, Ted Ginn, either Texas DB, no DE unless its someone like Spencer late in round one who can be moved to OLB

Agreed with all except OL. I wouldn't be upset with Grubbs or Staley.

There's no way Peterson will make it beyond the top 6-7 slots...simply won't happen...and that's from someone who doesn't even like him.

You can't look at the teams selecting and say they don't need a RB...up that high teams select on value, which is why Detroit wants out of slot #2 even though they could take Thomas or Quinn there...they won't because Johnson has to go before those guys.

Let's see....Russell, Johnson, Thomas should go before Peterson.
Quinn, Adams could go before Peterson, but there's no one else. Peterson won't drop out of the top 10....bank it.

I like your post and agree with most of it. I do think Quinn is a safe pick for a first round QB.

I don't understand why Lynch isn't getting any press. I guess AP is so much more fun to speculate about. Lynch is too safe to be fun to debate.

Why would it be so bad to trade up a little to draft Lynch. Is everyone saying Lynch is not much of an upgrade over JJ if at all? I'm leaving my opinion about that out of it BTW.

Pretty good post. I'm going to be dissatisfied with this draft, not because I think that the Cowboys are in any great need, but because this year would have been a great year to take an offensive lineman, but it just isn't stacked there.

All I really want is Meachem, but he likely won't be there. Otherwise, pull a 2004, get a 1 for next year, and get S. Rice in the second. I like Rice a lot, and he can develop on our team.

Why believe anything any NFL person says these days? They all know the media game, and they're all oh-so-cleverly trying to outwit each other.

Buffalo, at pick 12: All right. Who is the draft pick? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both draft, and find out who is right... and who is slammed in tomorrow's paper.

Rams, at pick 13: But it's so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would admit to wanting the player on his own draft board or his opponent's? Now, a clever man would talk about the player at the top of his own board, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he will get anyways. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not trade for the the draft slot in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the draft slot in front of me.

Buffalo: You've made your decision then?

Rams: Not remotely. Because that linebacker comes from Australia, as everyone knows, and Australia is entirely peopled with criminals, and criminals are used to having people not trust them, as you are not trusted by me, so I can clearly not choose the draft slot in front of you.

Buffalo: Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

Rams: Wait til I get going! Now, where was I?

Buffalo: Australia.

Rams: Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the player's origin, so I can clearly not choose the draft slot in front of me.

Buffalo: You're just stalling now.

Rams: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you? You've beaten my giant offensive lineman, which means your defensive line is exceptionally strong, so you could've waited to pick a running back with your own pick, trusting on your defensive strength to save you, so I can clearly not choose the draft pick in front of you. But, you've also bested my Spaniard quarterback, which means you must have studied, and in studying you must have learned that man is mortal, so you would wait to take the draft pick as far from yourself as possible, so I can clearly not choose the draft pick in front of me.

Buffalo: You're trying to trick me into giving away something. It won't work.

Rams: IT HAS WORKED! YOU'VE GIVEN EVERYTHING AWAY! I KNOW WHICH PLAYER IT IS!

Buffalo: Then make your choice.

Rams: I will, and I choose - What in the world can that be? [Gestures up and away from the table. Buffalo representative looks. Rams representative swaps the draft slots]

Buffalo: What? Where? I don't see anything.

Rams: Well, I- I could have sworn I saw something. No matter. First, let's draft. Me from my slot, and you from yours.

[They draft]

Buffalo: You guessed wrong.

Rams: You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched draft boards when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a passing game in Cleveland, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...

I would actually be happy with Blaylock in the second. I think that he is a beast and should be better than Kosier on day one.
