Edwards took over in Minnesota as the DC in 2014. DVOA rankings by year under him:

2014 - 23rd
2015 - 14th
2016 - 7th
2017 - 1st
2018 - 3rd
2019 - 4th

The Vikings let his contract expire in order to make Zimmer's son the co-DC with the DL coach. FWIW, the Vikings defense has slipped to 19th this year.

Granted, some will say it was really Mike Zimmer that created those defenses, which is likely true to some extent, but at this point, what's it hurt to put Edwards in charge?

They’ve been trying different schemes. Tried a 3-4 hybrid first few weeks. Tried some 5-2 today. Without offseason time, you can’t make a scheme change work especially when you’re missing 5 starters.

12 new DCs in the league. 11 are doing a better job than Nolan. He is the worst right now in terms of current performance compared to the defense the previous year under the old coordinator. Injuries are affecting all teams, so that's a weak excuse IMO.

Nolan was a bad hire. We'll learn that painful lesson this season, unfortunately. And what makes me nervous is that Jerry and Stephen will stupidly buy into this theory as well and bring Nolan back in 2021 only to get another slap in the face that year as Nolan sucks again.

The Browns changed coaching staffs as well. The Cowboys have no excuses because 31 other teams had no offseason as well. Mike Nolan has been fired as a defensive coordinator multiple times and he was the one coaching hire Dallas made this year that gave me pause.

Typically I would agree with you on this, but this defense has been beyond bad with no signs of getting better. They can continue to experiment, but this embarassment of a defense has only gotten worse, and can't be accepted.

I'm all for having Edwards take over at this moment. If were able to fix this defense, just get rid of Nolan right now.

Are you dumb?

So you actually watch this defense and tell yourself that coaching is the problem? WOW!!!!!

Hows about we give the players a bit of time to adapt?

He's a mediocre to bad DC. The defense is actually getting worse it seems each week. He didn't have a unique situation as there were 11 other new DCs in the league that had to work under the same restrictions and yet Nolan is performing the worst.

It was a dumb hire, easily the worst one McCarthy made. Stinks too because I think he made some good hires elsewhere but the season could unravel over him hiring a guy who gave him a job years ago.

You'll figure it out soon enough. I recall you were slow on the uptake with some other coaches as well, eventually seeing the light.

You'll see it with Nolan too, eventually.

And again, this is not a defense of some of the talent. But this defense is on pace to be the worst in NFL history and the talent isn't that bad.

Trying to switch to a 3-4 was a huge mistake. Huge.

We aren't running a 3-4. We are running more of a hybrid. We basically run a 5-2 in base and a 4-2 in nickel.

I don't know if this is what we would be running if we had Vander and Lee healthy. What I'm seeing is a D that is trying to get the best front 7 guts on on the field.

And because no off season Nolan shouldn't have installed his convoluted scheme and gone with a scheme that the players have played in the past. All he done is make the defense look like keystone cops.

Agree 100%. I never liked him but I was more so shocked at his lack of success. I've seen enough. Let's attempt to salvage this season because this defense with Nolan will never be good.

I started this thread but I am under no delusions that they will actually make a change any time soon. McCarthy is tied to him and the Jones are always slow to make change until it's almost, or is, too late.
