As offensive coordinator in Super Bowl 13. Man, I watched that game again, and somebody PLEASE tell me why they didn't run Tony Dorsett more and why they kept giving those stupid carries to the fullbacks? Newhouse was carrying the ball as much as Dorsett and wasn't getting squat. Dorsett had 68 yards after 12 carries, so why didn't he have 20 carries by that time?

And that first drive. run - boom, run -boom, run- boom.... I mean KILLING the Steelers with the run and with Dorsett specifically. Then that stupid reverse flea flicker thing that resulted in a fumble. That is called outsmarting yourself.

Why can't these old matchups ever turn out differently the second time you watch them? :)

After rewatching those old games a million times I see them differently these days...

I see Lee Roy Jordan reading the play correctly and going to his left, filling the hole and stuffing Starr short of the goalline, then looking up as the clock runs out!

After Duane Thomas fumbles near the goalline, I see the refs waiting until the players are unpiled before deciding who to award the ball to. Manders has it. We score a TD on the next play and go on to beat the Colts.

I see Jackie Smith actually CATCHING the ball!

I see Montana backpedaling with Too Tall & Bethea bearing down on him, then he slips and is sacked. Time runs out and we go on to crush the Bengals in the SB!

You get the idea... You just need to watch them a few thousand more times and you'll get it.

In the words of Jimmy Stewart in "Harvey": "Well, I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it."

[/B]."

My dream is a bit different. SF scores the TD, but on the next series no one make the shoe string tackle on Pearson (?), and he takes it to the house. The Niner dynasty is strangled in its crib.

And you wanted to see Jerry keep him? Before Jerry even bought the team many fans were already hollering how the game had passed Landry by. Myself I did feel the game passed Tom by but I did realize that if I just paid x-amount of million to buy a team I'm going to hire who I damn well want and Jerry did that when he hired Jimmy. As far as I'm concerned Bum Bright the owner at the time should have gone to Landry and laid out exactly what was going to take place which would have allowed Landry to walk out on his own. JMO

Actually, drew ran free, 11 years later!

That makes Alvin Harper's catch and run in the NFC Championship Game the sweetest play in Cowboys history.

It still ticks me off that Tom was treated like he was by Jerry. The man deserved more respect than that. That being said, Landrys last years were not pleasant but If I remember correctly he DID Draft Micheal Irvin, and the consensus was that had he not been fired he was Going to draft Troy Aikman.

Sounds to me like he was headed in the right direction for rebuilding. :)

The last 2.5 years of the Landry era were painful-it all started with that gut-wrenching loss at The Meadowlands midway through the '86 season. At the time, we were 6-2 and were set to take control of the NFCE, until White and Hogeboom both went down for the year, and then a holding call at the end negated a long pass play that would have set up the game-tieing TD.

It was all downhill from there.

Bum Bright was the owner and Landry boss it was Brights job and responsibility to inform Landry of what was going to take place. Sorry just like breaking up with a girl there is no easy way to fire a person. Had Bright did his job it would never have come down to that. Believe as a fan since 65 I hated seeing Landry leave but again I also understood with a new owner he was going to bring in his own people.

A lot of fans and media wanted him fired early on. Tex gave him a 10 year extension. After that the team took off and had 20 straight winning years, a feat no team can match.

The moral of the story? Talent and coaching will come together if patience is the guide.

At the point that Dorsett had 12 carries for 68 yards, Newhouse had 8 carries for 3 yards.

Newhouse got hurt and left. Then Laidlaw had 3 carries for 12 yards.

Final numbers: Dorsett 16 carries for 96 yards; Fullbacks, 11 carries for 15 yards.

Tell me why you don't run Dorsett more in that game, and why you keep trying to feed the fullback?

Which is why I'm willing to give Wade a chance after this season, win or lose. At least let him play out his contract.

No matter how sour things go, firing a coach is never the solution. Having bumps in the road isn't abnormal at all. Look at Cowher's tenure in Pitt-didn't he have 2 bad seasons in '98-'99 sandwhiched in? Remember the terrible '03 season, which was followed by 2 great seasons...one being the Super Bowl?

Let me guess-they wanted to force-feed it to Drew "cancer" Pearson so that they can make him happy?:laugh1:

That is exactly why I was for giving Barry Switzer a 10 year extension, and Chan Gailey after that, and Dave Campo after that, because firing a coach is never the answer.

Moral of the story, patience means that talent and coaching comes together if you have the right talent and you have the right coach.

Actually, Drew Pearson did not have a catch in that game until they were down 35-17.

Since message boards weren't around 30 years ago, it's only right that we go back and straighten some of this stuff out.

What's up with Too Tall Jones quitting football to pursue a boxing career?

Selfish jerk!

Exactly. And why in the world would Randy White try to advance that kickoff? Just get down on the ball.

And was that the worst onside kick attempt in history, the final one, when Septien dribbles it up the middle and chases it himself?

Jeff Rohrer is soft. He's a retro Bobby Carpenter.

Oh, and Rod Hill? Are you kidding me. Gil Brandt strikes again!
