Jeff Rohrer is soft. He's a retro Bobby Carpenter.

Oh, and Rod Hill? Are you kidding me. Gil Brandt strikes again!

Who was the special teams coach? He should have been fired.

*Septien kicked off out of bounds in that game
*Randy White fumbled a kickoff in that game and was put out there with a cast on his hand
*The last onside kick was the worst one devised in football history
*and Danny White shanked at least one punt in that game

Actually, Drew Pearson did not have a catch in that game until they were down 35-17.

Ah-but wasn't he double covered alot, and didn't he have issues of slowing on routes and not fighting for the ball? :laugh1:

No, he says he was open all day, single covered, but Roger wasn't looking his way, he was trying to hit Dupree.

A lot of fans and media wanted him fired early on. Tex gave him a 10 year extension. After that the team took off and had 20 straight winning years, a feat no team can match.

The moral of the story? Talent and coaching will come together if patience is the guide.

So what you're saying is the people calling for Wade's Garret's and Romo's head are being impatient and should relax?

I agree which is why I have always been hesitant about having a coach fired. I watching losing team after losing team constantly rebuilding because the coach is always getting fired.

This thread has potential for greatness.

What the hell was Roger doing fulfilling his commitment to the Navy? He not only cost us those years but Chad Hennings followed his example.

Patriotism...pfft.

I would say an owner would have to be a moron to listen to fans in determining if a coach should be fired. Fans live for the day and seem to be driven by emotion. Hell Dallas lose a game and many are hollering bloody murder around here. Any team in their right mind will give a coach and his staff time to do the job not 1 year or 2 years that is stupid and teams that do that end up alway in a rebuilding mode.

This thread has no potential for greatness. It's simply a nursing home thread wanting to revise history. :D

The last 2.5 years of the Landry era were painful-it all started with that gut-wrenching loss at The Meadowlands midway through the '86 season. At the time, we were 6-2 and were set to take control of the NFCE, until White and Hogeboom both went down for the year, and then a holding call at the end negated a long pass play that would have set up the game-tieing TD.

It was all downhill from there.

Except Hogeboom was in Indy in 1986.

:) Anyone else like Gary Hogeboom here? I was a Hogeboom fan in the 1984 controversy, I had high hopes for that guy. He comes out in the opening game, on Monday Night Football, and leads a come from behind win against the Rams. Man I was excited. What a downer the way it all turned out. In Hogeboom's defense, the Cowboys were on the decline by the time he got his turn. That 1985 team was very lucky to win the division as 1986-89 proved.

Wasn't Mike Ditka in charge of special teams? I don't think Dallas had a true special teams coach, but one of the position coaches pulled double duty.

What was Roger Staubach doing in the game? He turned the ball over. He wasted a time out before missing the throw to Jackie Smith because he didn't understand why the play was called. Just run the darn play. Stop over thinking the situation. Geez, he needs to go. He is 36 and will turn 37 before the next season. Dallas has a great QB being wasted at back up.

Not a fan now, or wasn't a fan of the move at the time? It seemed like most of Dallas (including the team) was for the move at the time.

I froze my rear end off at the 1983 playoff game against the Rams in Texas Stadium. Danny White was awful all game long. By the time the 84 season rolled around, I was more than ready for a change. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the answer, but 1980, 81, 82 and 83 playoff exits made you wonder.

Btw, most important Cowboys game I ever attended in person was the 1977 NFC Championship game, Cowboys over the Vikings on their way to a win over the Broncos.

In all seriousness, I don't think the NFL had fully passed Landry by at the end of his tenure. He was willing to make changes. He hired Paul Hackett to be offensive coordinator and that really was a different offensive system. It was pretty effective, too. Dallas had a powerful offense until they lost Danny White to the broken wrist.

In his latter years Landry stopped using the flex defense. He may have been stubborn and held on too long to the flex, but eventually he did change with much prodding.

It was Landry's talent evaluation that hurt him the most in the latter part of his career. And he was not alone. Gil Brandt and Tex Schramm had as much to do or more with the players that were brought to Dallas. They did a poor job of finding talented players and sometimes when they did they just had bad luck with them. Mike Sherrard was a very good receiver his rookie year. Unfortunately, he broke his leg in a fluke occurrence and was never the same.

I think Landry as head coach would have done fine had he stayed in Dallas if other changes could have been made around him. The Cowboys needed more turnover in the scouting department and perhaps another defensive coordinator to come in and help. I think Landry as HC and with a lot of input in the offensive schemes and play calling would have done fine. It may not have resulted in 3 SB wins in the 90s, but Landry was a coach that could have had some form of success in any era.

I would love to have Landry's input for the current group of offensive players. I think he would be great at finding ways on how to make this offensive click.

I had hope for Gary and understood the move after all White was dealing with the effects of a broken wrist and never seem to be the same after that injury. That 83 playoff game I was there as well and it is more than White as the defense gave up over 200 yards to Dickerson that day and you are right that was one cold SOB of a day. Pipe had burst at the stadium and had about an inch of ice on the upper level of the stadium
