A scenario for people from a risk/reward perspective:

Let's say that you're a head coach. Your offense moves the ball all the way down to the opposing team's 1-yard line, for a first-and-goal - perhaps as the result of a pass interference penalty. Originally, you were playing for just a field goal, but now you have a golden opportunity to score a TD.

Unfortunately, there are only three seconds remaining in the first half, so you can only run one play. Not enough time for two plays. You can try to score a touchdown for 7 points, or take the safe approach and kick a field goal which, from this distance (<20 yards,) would almost certainly be good.

If your team scores a touchdown, you will be doubly the hero. If your team fails to score the TD, you will be doubly the goat.

If your team kicks a field goal, you will make some fans content and some fans upset.

I am purposefully not specifying the score, opponent, or game situation. This is a vague and general scenario.

I am also not specifying how good or bad your offense is, or who is your QB, or star wide receiver, etc.

First-and-goal at the 1-yard line, with three seconds left in the first half:

1#. Go for broke. Try to score a TD and get 7 points.

2#. No, play it safe. Kick the field goal and take the 3 points.

This is almost impossible to answer without knowing the game situation; however, assuming that the score is relatively close and there's plenty of football left to play, I go for the TD.

What's the score?!?

Im taking the FG almost every time

This. the decision would be totally dependant on score, game situation, talent level of both teams.

That's very hard to answer. I need/want to know the score, how well my offense is doing running or passing the ball. Then I can make a call (the right call for me and our team) .

This like saying:
You are alone with a girl, on an island.
You can have her for a night, or you can have a couple of hamburgers.....

You cannot make a good choice without the details.
Are you on the island for a night?
Have you been there for weeks w/o food?
Is the woman Roseanne Barr? or your dream girl?
STD? Mad Cow's?

:)

You go for the FG almost every time. Heading for the half with points on the board is huge.

It's hard to say without further info, ... but I will say this.

If I'm coaching the present day Dallas Cowboys, I would probably kick the FG.

But if I'm coaching the team that I would build, I would run it every time.

I kick the FG, because I would be the head coach of a team with outstanding defense and we would win 3-0:)

Without knowing the variables involved, I'm going for the FG every single time too. You can't please every fan and trying to please every single fan would drive anyone nutso.

Like I said before, it takes about 5 field goals to equal 2 touchdowns.

Touchdowns are especially valuable. 1 yard? You got to go for it. Same reason why I didn't understand kicking a low percentage 53 yard field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 1.

Have your QB take the snap and then serpentine back towards his own end zone, running out the clock. When he gets up, have him spike the football and then slap the referee so hard his hat flies off, ensuring a 15yd penalty when you return for the second half.

I would rather act like I am going for it or kicking the FG, but instead pooch punt it and pin the opponent deep.....then let Ware beast.

if you do go for it, that would be momentum shift because it be like a goaline stands, then again if i'd go for it, if do a fade to my REceiver, use a big back or do a FB dive.

Given only the info you provided, I'd take the FG for one key reason.....time remaining in the half.

In many 4th and goal situation from the 1 yard line, you have the benefit of leaving the opposition with terrible field position IF you fail to score the TD.

The opponent is almost forced to go conservative and more often than not end up punting from their own endzone and you end up with great field position.

That's why I prefer to be aggressive and go for the TD most of the time.
