Some Quick Reactions

The Great Darius Jackson over Bo Scarbrough is interesting, especially considering Bo can't do what he does best until he's facing opponents.

Rico over Schultz and Wells, despite the fact that (according to many) Rico can't play football.

LVE is a backup at MLB. They'll figure out ways to get him on the field, but strange for a 1st round pick to start the season as a backup.

Love the top 4 CB's, but after that, it gets inexperienced very quickly.

They still need to do something at safety. Even if they don't trade for Earl. Heath, Woods and Frazier are acceptable, but everyone else is barely an NFL level talent.

No sighting yet of Tavon as a returner, although I assume that will change.

Antwaun Woods has flashed, but looks buried on the depth chart for now. Same with Tapper, who will really need to do something to make this roster.

Randy Gregory isn't on the chart at all. Still early, but is it possible he starts the season on some sort of exemption list?

I think it will come down to special teams between these two, and who can do a better job there.

I'm not reading too much into this one. Schultz has missed camp time due to the birth of his child. So we'll see where things go now that he's back.

I've read that it's "three guys for two spots", meaning that they're trying to have these three guys as best prepared for WLB and MLB and nickel roles as the year can, rather than shifting anyone to SLB.

Love the top 4 CB's, but after that, it gets inexperienced very quickly.

I'm reading good things about the UDFA Ward, he might get that 5th spot. But I only expect them to keep 5 cornerbacks anyway and the bottom guy will probably be inactive on gamedays.

They still need to do something at safety. Even if they don't trade for Earl. Heath, Woods and Frazier are acceptable, but everyone else is barely an NFL level talent.

Legit concern. But I don't think that the potential Thomas deal is dead yet.

No sighting yet of Tavon as a returner, although I assume that will change.

I read a quote where O'Quinn said that he knew what's Austin could do, so he didn't need to see him out there in the first preseason game.

Antwaun Woods has flashed, but looks buried on the depth chart for now. Same with Tapper, who will really need to do something to make this roster.

Broaddus reported that he started with the 1's during the most recent practice session, so it looks like he's moved up quickly. And I think Tapper is ahead of Ealy at this point.

Randy Gregory isn't on the chart at all. Still early, but is it possible he starts the season on some sort of exemption list?

I wouldn't think so. I expect both Gregory and Collins to start practicing full time after this San Francisco game.

If Jaylon is really back 100% from the knee injury it should be perfectly understandable how LVE cannot beat him out.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I want to see Jaylon play a Von Miller type role. Coaches should put him in rush drills with DEs and see how he does. I am not saying move him there permanently but he should get a shot.

This gets LVE on the field and will help if the non DLaw DEs fail to live up to expectations.

The glaring need at DT and Safety has me a little irked, but we've known that for months now. Irving can't get back soon enough.

Good coaches "scheme" around the personnel, the talent that can succeed in situations.
The hard term of 4-3 or 3-4 as a standard base set D, should have been fazed out years ago.
You play the scheme around the talent that you possess.

Some of your comments seem to treat this depth chart as if it is set for the start of the season, and others seem to treat it as preliminary and subject to change. Of course I know you realize that some of the numbers will have to be trimmed off.

Yeah, Jaylon was considered a top 2-3 talent coming out of college. LVE was considered top 20-30. 100% healthy would imply his ceiling is at least as high as it was coming out of college. I don't know why anyone would expect LVE to beat him out this early, if at all.

Logic.

We have 3 potentially top 100 linebackers in the NFL, assuming LVE develops quickly, we could have the best linebacker corp in the NFL by the end of the season.

LVE was drafted as an insurance policy that could turn into a luxury if health played in our favor. If and probably when Sean Lee goes down, drafting LVE potentially prevents our defense from caving in like it did last year without Lee.

Also if Jaylon couldn’t recover from the knee, LVE would provide talent opposite Lee and at least give the team a solid starting duo.

Fortunately, Jaylon seems to be all back and it looks like the team is taking it slow with Lee. If he can stay healthy for 13/14 games and LVE pans out, the team gets that luxury of having 3 great linebackers with versatile skill sets.

If all goes well I see LVE taking the MLB spot as he’s a better pass defender, and I see Jaylon sliding into that downhill pass-rush Bruce Irving role the Seahawks and Kris Richard had a few years back.

The back seven could be really good.
