This isnt a big deal at all but just wanted to clarify. In the second round our pick is actually at #40 and not the routinely reported #41. It doesnt follow the first rounds stength of schedule order and will flip every round after the first.

I wanted to run by a a first round scenario and get your thoughts on what we should do. So, lets say the first 8 picks in no particular order go like this:

Da'quan Bowers
AJ Green
Patrick Peterson
Nick Fairly
Marcel Dareus
Prince Amukamara
Ryan Mallett
Robert Quinn

Who at #9 would you want to take given this scenario. I love alot of players still on the board but dont like them at #9. Thoughts?

We start fielding calls to see who wants Cam Newton.
Even if we have no calls we call the skins and tell them there are two teams wanting to trade up above them to take cam newton and if they are willing to trade up a spot to secure him.
:D

Derek Sherrod, OT Mississippi State 6-6 #305 -

Doug Free played well at ROT last year in Columbo's absence and with the top LOT still on the board,

why not have the flexibility of 2 athletic young bookends that are interchangeable?

Sure makes game-day decisions of whittling down 53 to 45 easier, in the case of deciding on back-up OL in the case of injuries.

This is a case where value equals need and is a fine pick by Dallas

Yep..........

Minny and Miami need a QB yesterday.

We would have teams wanting to get ahead of WSH at 10.

Worst case scenario, I would imagine Jerry would shut down the phone company he would be working them so hard.

I'd be ok with losing Dareus, but if we lost Quinn by 1 pick, I'd throw my keyboard through my monitor. But, if the draft fell this way, I'd pick Haywood DE OSU. Drew Boylhart expects him to shoot up draft boards after the Senior Bowl and Combine, and he's the best prototypical 3-4 DE in the draft.

Some team will want the Missouri QB and we need to make them pay a premium price.

It's not going to be easy to trade out of that situation, you've got to look at it from another team's perspective. I don't think any of the QB needy teams will want to jump ahead and grab one of those QBs because none of them are blue chip prospects. It wouldn't be worth it, NFL teams are not dumb. We will probably be forced to stay put and draft someone at 9 in that scenario.

Now, if that happens the way you have it (which is very realistic) these are the only players I would consider.

Cameron Jordan
Tyron Smith
J.J. Watt
Mark Ingram
Brandon Harris

BPA is Mark Ingram but we have 3 decent running backs on the team so it would be a luxury pick. Cameron Jordan and JJ Watt are both good 5-Techs who should be solid starters, but if I'm taking a 5-tech in the top 10 it HAS to be a gamechanger, especially in a draft that is deep with 5-techs. Tyron Smith would be the only tackle I would even consider with a top 10 pick, he has the most upside by far but is still a little raw and needs to gain weight. Harris is probably the best defensive back available, but just like the DE's it is a deep CB class so would you spend a top 10 pick on him when there's not much of a dropoff between him and corners you can get in the middle of round 2?

I'd probably go with Ingram because if I have a top 10 pick I'm spending it on a real difference maker and a guy who has a chance to be a star. You use the draft to get the best players possible when you pick, don't force yourself to draft for need.

I'd look to trade down a few spots and target RB Mark Ingram at a later pick.

If I couldn't trade out of the pick, I'd just go for Ingram at #9 and try to deal Choice for whatever I could.

If all of the players we want are gone we are still sitting in a good spot. With Washington right behind us someone is going to want to move ahead of them and draft a QB.

Sticking it to the Commanders. Woo hoo!

Yeah this is the situation that scares me the most with being at #9. We have to hope that if this happens, there is someone that we don't know right now who flies up the draft boards cause as of right now there is a clear line of separation.

Right now, those 7, plus whatever QB looks to be what would happen ahead of us. As many QBs as possible need to go ahead of us, but all of them have issues. Long time before the draft, alot will hopefully change.

If there is 2 QB's Newton and Gabbert left on the board, then you can rest assured several teams will be calling Jerry. I wouldn't be surprised if Miami called to jump Washington; if the QB's are gone. They would love to get their hands on the Alabama RB. Now what would you ask for to move from the #9 spot to say #15? If a team is looking for one of those Qb's; why not ask for a 2nd round pick. Now address the offensive line Jerry! Jerry is making another trade! Down

I agree with this.

A lot of posters here think that we can just trade down if we're in that situation, and the reality is we most likely won't be able to. #9 becomes a terrible spot if those 7 elite players are off the board, we will want to trade out, but what makes anyone think that another team will want to trade up to be in that situation. If the value is not good there, we won't have a trade partner.

Gabbert maybe even moreso.
I'd love to see both of those guys go before us.

In any case, given the OP, I would take offers too. there are several players we could use that slot into the second half of round 1. We could get one of them and another good extra player "for free" in rd2.

only problem with that, trading any player during the draft, you cant, with no cba signed, no player can be traded during the draft, from what i understand

If all those players are gone and we can't trade out of #9. I would take a hard look at these 3 players:

Von Miller - Spencer has not shown enough in his first 3 years to warrant a contract extension. Maybe that changes under Ryan...maybe not

Cam Jordan - I doubt Ratliff moves to DE. Spears is gone, Hatcher is gone. Bowen stays, but Jordon has 10 times the upside.

Brandon Harris - Newman is old. Jenkins and Scandrick will be fine under Ryan. Always need good CB's in today's NFL.

Way to early to tell what will happen, but these are 3 good players and play a position of need.

There's no such thing as a bad situation for the Cowboys. We need major upgrades at a host of positions, especially along the defense.

I'd love to see the different ways Rob Ryan could use Akeem Ayers, especially in his amoeba defenses and 0-7 alignments. Remember when Rex had Adalius Thomas in Baltimore and he played him every position except cornerback ... Ayers could be that kind of player for Rob.

Likewise, I think Cameron Jordan could be a beast. Look at the way Rex was schooling Brady and Manning the last two weeks ... 3 man line and dropping 8 men back into zone tier coverage to take away all the gaps and seams. To pull it off you got to get pass pressure with a 3 man line, like Shaun Ellis was getting on Brady ... You could do that with a 3 man line of Jordan, Ratliff and Ware.

Bottomline is this team needs difference makers and play makers on defense. Not hole fillers with marginal talents.

Frankly I would rather trade down twice and pick around 25 or so; get two extra 2nd rd picks. First and second round is where the talent is this year. After that it gets really thin.

I assume there will be a CBA in place before the draft.

I wouldn't necessarily trade Choice on draft day when his value is lowest. Wait until the end of Aug and some team might need him due to injury. Or keep him just in case Ingram or Jones get injured.
