Fish: Cowboys intrigued by Ohio State QB CJ Stroud in the NFL draft

While I'm not suggesting the Cowboys will make any move to go get Stroud, I also don't think it's impossible if they really wanted to. I can't believe that Dak has negative trade value on the market right now and if there is a team like the Colts or Jets that want a veteran QB without the cost that Rogers, Jackson, etc will come with Dak becomes a logical option if you can get Dak to agree to a trade.

It's Fish yall........take it for what it's worth. But it's interesting this comes after their reported interest in Hooker. Hmmm....sounds like Stephen's trying to get a head start on Todd France and Dak. Now let's see how quickly or if at all they shoot this down.

It's pretty much what I've been saying, there's no 2024 out there. This issue has to be fixed NOW, this year, or the cat's out of the bag a change in QB is a real possibility after 2023 ( salary is already guaranteed ).

Cowboys 'Intrigued' by Ohio State QB CJ Stroud in NFL Draft - Source

The Cowboys are "intrigued'' by NFL Draft prospect C.J. Stroud ... which adds some intrigue to what they might do with Dak Prescott.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys have a contractual plan with one quarterback, Dak Prescott, and a developmental plan with another - some prospect, at some point, in April's NFL Draft.

But in Dallas' search for either a backup to Prescott or an heir to him, a revelation. ...

The Cowboys find themselves "intrigued'' by Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, an NFL source tells CowboysSI.com.

"I don't know the 'how,''' the source said. "But (Dallas is) absolutely intrigued by Stroud.''

Stroud is of course something other than "developmental'' in the sense that he is considered to be among the top two quarterback prospects in this draft, alongside Alabama's Bryce Young - and Dallas has the No. 26 pick in the first round.

That obviously makes the "how'' of Stroud to Dallas challenging.

Another obstacle: The Dak Debate. As it stands, the Cowboys' plan is to extend Prescott beyond his present remaining two years on his deal. That plan is about both creating new cap room (an extension can give Dallas $22 million of room for 2023) and about a trust in Prescott, 29, to be a "franchise QB'' for the rest of his career.

COO Stephen Jones recently suggested that Prescott could be Dallas' quarterback "for the next 10 years.'' And there isn't much logic in both extending Prescott and using a first-round pick on his successor. Additionally, if the Jones family believes the Cowboys are on the cusp of true Super Bowl contention with Prescott as the centerpiece, shouldn't Dallas be trying to add weapons around him (as CeeDee Lamb has said out-loud) rather than trying to acquire a player who would be his backup?

Jerry Jones insists Dak is "the guy.'' Stephen takes it a step beyond, recently saying, “I want to make sure I’m clear about that. Dak’s going to be our guy over and over again just like Troy (Aikman) was, just like (Tony) Romo was, like (Roger) Staubach was.”

And yet ... "intrigued'' is real. ... while "Dak as Aikman/Staubach'' seems hyperbolic.

Stroud (6-3, 215) threw for more than 8,000 yards and 85 touchdowns (to just 12 interceptions) in 2021-22 while becoming Ohio State's first two-time Heisman Trophy finalist.

The Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are likely to take quarterbacks in the first four picks, so Stroud could be gone early. ... and Dallas could have him on its eventual Big Board early as well.

Lol, I’d guess most teams, not the Chiefs and Bengals would be!!!

Trade Dak, swap a first, trade a 2nd and 4th this year or even your 1st next year.

Do it, Jerry.

Make em sad.

Don't even bother getting your hopes up.. usual off season BS to 'keep us relevant' in discussions.

We won't move up the board.. we won't make trades.. we will restructure Dak and locked ourselves into misery for even longer.. and then find some round 7 basement dweller back up to make sure Dak doesn't feel any pressure to perform or do his job.. and so it goes.

And then Stroud will probably go one to be a champion and we will sit and lament that small period of time when we thought we had a chance of actually getting a decent QB.

Every single team is intrigued by CJ Stroud. I’m pretty sure he’ll go #1 to either Houston, Carolina or Indy…whoever trades up.

This isn't even reasonably realistic as Stephen Jones would have to blow up his cap to even consider such a move, that doesn't include what they would have to do to draft up for probably the 1st pick in the entire draft. I think Dak carries 40 million dead money. I think you are right, might be more about Dak's extension.

If they want to start thinking about moving on from Dak, you draft a QB and start his development. There are always quality QB's that last to the end of the 1st rd every draft. They also can take a flier on a change of scenery type of QB, like the Jets Zach Wilson, who would come at a discount price, but still highly talented.

As stated, I agree OP talk is next to impossible but what about their reported interest in Hooker. Do you think they are going to have to address Dak's cap hit maybe before free agency but def before the draft?

They are going to need the cap space before the draft to be able to retain their in house fa's, even before considering outside guys. They can restructure some deals, cut players, but they are going to have to do something with Dak's contract, either sign him to an extension to spread out or restructure and pay the bill down the line, which they have gotten is trouble with in the past. I firmly believe all this has to be taken care of prior to the draft.

They almost drafted the Washington Commanders QB last season, doesn't mean they are looking to replace Dak right away, but want to start developing a future option at the position. Also, remember Cooper Rush is a fa and may depart. I bet he follows Moore to LA.

Selling season folks. You’d trade the farm for him and still would have to deal Dak.

This is about as relevant as trading for Rodgers.

Click bait central. I’m sure about 28 teams are intrigued with Stroud. Unless you have Mahomes, Burrow, Lawrence, Herbert you’re interested
this^ Fish at it again.

Do I think Stroud ends up here in the fall? No. Do I think they would like to move on from number 4? Sure do. The question is who and how fast.

Jerry wants Fisher 2 run with this BS. They aint in any position to draft him. This is funny. Its lyin season already. Same way they created a fake narrative 2 run Amari. IE he quits and is lazy. Cleveland is glad they have him. Who will be the next fall guy?

Didn't the buckeyes have a 2 time Heisman trophy winning running back in the 70s?
He would be the first 2 time Heisman finalist, not Stroud.

All 32 scouting departments should be intrigued, but that doesn't mean they have a chance to get him.
