Fish: Cowboys QB Change Behind Dak Prescott Means Exploring Top 7 Options

I am going to hype up Tommy Mellott from Montana State again, for the 5th time.

Tommy is a raw, 6’0 QB who played at Montana State in a super gimmicky offense that makes him hard to scout.

But he has an elastic arm that can make throws on the run and at weird angles. His pocket presence needs work, but he has it. He’s smart. He threw for 36 TDs and 2 INTs last year. He runs a freaking 4.42 if not faster. He is one of the best running QBs I have ever seen. He has a nose for the end zone and knows when to tuck and run.

2:23. 8:34. 12:00. 14:22. 14:58.

Those are NFL caliber throws. That’s what I’m looking for in a college QB. He can be had in the later rounds of the draft due to his height and the fact he needs refinement.

But I’d love to see what the kid can do in a fast paced, RPO system that features a lot of quick passes over the middle and a strong running game. That is his bread and butter.

Love it!!! He'd be great with us!!!

I watch Big Sky football. (NAU fan) He is really good. Hopefully level of competition isn’t held against him. Skettebo came out of Big Sky and tore up the Big 12. Mellott is worth a draft pick for the team astute enough to do a thorough job of scouting college quarterbacks.

League minimum salary for Rookies in 2025 is $840,000.

They likely want to pay Lance 2M, just like Rush.

Dallas Cowboys will need to explore new options as they identify the next backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott.

There were many games of his where he was clearly the best, and most athletic player on the field. Skills are there.

This is the most overblown story of the off-season.

Dallas will draft a QB, but it won't be early, and it would be a mini miracle if that guy can be THE GUY at any point in the future.

Dallas could bring Trey Lance back but have zero interest in doing so at this point. Why? Because Lance ended up being a 5M cap hit last year. Lance has proven exactly zero and made 34M in the NFL. That's more criminal than Dak's overpay.

Dallas badly needs a starting WR, a slot CB, LB, Safety, 0/1 Tech DT.
They also need to extend or move on from Micah Parsons.

I urge you all to spend your fantasy draft cycles focusing on those positions in this soft QB draft.

Will Howard is a worthy target for Dallas.
He is a R4/5 guy who can be a long-term plus back up very much akin to Cooper Rush.
He is a solid athlete, but his run style is power not speed.
And he has produced with tremendous OL play in front of him thus far.
He lacks pop with the arm but understands ball placement.
He learned the tOSU offense very quickly and is a smart QB.

But he simply won't earn NFL starter grades from scouts.
And it only takes one team to take him early.

I'd rate him behind Ewers long-term based on arm ability. But both have similar non-starter plus back up grades on most draft boards.
