The way to stay out of cap trouble is to draft good players and use them up in the front years of their rookie deals and then cast them aside if they cannot perform any longer. Trading for starters and signing big time FAs often causes cap trouble down the road and these players often fail to deliver the goods. JJ is scared to take a chance for these reasons. IF N. Bowman plays after this season for Oakland, they got a good deal signing him. IF the Eagles use their new RB from Miami to win a SB or IF he is a 1000 yard back next year, then good for them. JJ has become a long term planner for better of worse.

So Carroll's $4M, which some of will still be on next year's cap, was just to buy a few weeks til Jourdan Lewis and Awuzie were ready? Even though Awuzie still isn't ready?
