Five dudes we still need on this roster

I like the roster more and more these days. I really do. "Depth" is not a word I've associated with our annual band of misfit toys, but slowly, it's creeping into the vernacular. It's like chasing a chicken around the backyard. Depth is tough to corral.

That said, there are some areas that need to be addressed, that can be addressed, that aren't being addressed. At least, not to my liking.

---------------
1. Punter

There should be about 47 of them in camp. We've got one dude that couldn't stay healthy last year who's been somewhat christened as the Chosen One already. Why? Let's have an all-out bloodbath for the punting job this training camp.

2. Backup quarterback

Orton's an OK guy, but he hasn't played in a game since I don't know when. I've read over and over how he's bouncing balls in and around receivers ad nauseum. He was the epitome of "meh" during his few starting years, and he never even had a Kitna-like flash season. He's growing moldy and creaky just standing around here. Let's kick some tires on some other veterans if possible, please.

3. Fullback

I can't tell if they plan to have one or not, but Vontae Leach is still out there. Rumored to be headed to Miami, but there's time. Didn't we free up some cap space? Leach, if he's still the same guy, is a road grater. Vickers was extraordinarily ordinary last year. Leach is a dramatic improvement. That is, again, if they intend to have a fullback on the roster this season.

4. Big, fat guy

I'm all about the new "speed" concept, and the 4-3 scheme of Kiffin and Marinelli. Love it. But we still need one big oaf to man the nose tackle "1 technique" postition on this team. Josh Brent could have been that, but he's in the pokey for the forseeable future. This Hayden guy impresses Broaddus, and I keep hearing that Hatcher is moving inside with Lissimore, Ratliff, yada, yada. I hope it works out, but we still need to run some more Sumo wrestlers through here in the next six weeks.

5. Return guy

I've never understood why Jerry is so apt to carry a "kickoff specialist" on his roster from time to time, but we never seem to want to "waste" a roster spot on a player that just returns kicks. Even worse, so often we've used starters in those roles like Patrick Crayton, Felix Jones, Dez Bryant, Terrance Newman, etc. Harris was decent at it, but he's becoming a critical part of the offense. We haven't had a real dedicated returner here since Reggie Swinton. Somebody call Reggie! Find one.

----------
By my calculations, those five guys can be fit into the remaining salary cap room if better alternatives can be identified and brought in.

This is no time for complacency, Jerry.

1. Could use more competition for him other than the kickoff specialist from Clemson, but they really like Jones I guess.
2. Not much in terms of a backup that could help, at least available right now. Unless you are an imbecile like Broaddus who wants Vince Young.
3. It is Vickers' job to win or it goes to a 4th TE. I do not think we are interested in spending a lot on Leach who offers little than the blocking role.
4. I agree we need someone with size for the DL. We are going too far on the light side and that could lead to problems if the design of getting to the QB is negated by teams exploiting that lack of size in the run game.
5. Harris has the PR duties down and looked excellent late last year. We need a KO player, but we could have someone emerge that is already on the roster. Could be Dunbar or Williams, maybe even Hamilton.

Of the five you listed, only one seems to have some vestage of urgency to it.

Vickers is the premiere blocking fullback in the NFL. He's not some spare part guy. Vickers is still hurt and coming off surgery, and he was awful last year.

Funny, he did not show it last season.

Oops, wow. MAJOR brain malfunction.

I meant, LEACH is the premiere blocking fullback in the league.

Good gosh, my sometimers is kicking in.

I agree he is. I just do not think we value the position as much any more due to the TE commitment we have made.

I know we were interested in him the last couple of times he hit the market.

If we keep 4 TEs then there is no way we keep a FB. I would suggest to use Escobar at FB in some sets, but I am afraid our RBs would run past him to the hole because he is so slow.

Why would you suggest using Escobar at FB if you think he is too slow.

Which of the following TEs least resembles a FB?
note: Vickers: 6-0, 250, Leach 6-0, 260
Escobar: 6-6, 251
Hanna: 6-3.5, 249
Rosario: 6-3, 250

As far as being too slow at FB, here are the FBs 40 and 10 yard times for comparison to Escobar:
Leach: 4.87, unknown
Vickers: 4.82, 1.74
Escobar: 4.78, 1.68

Lol. This was a succinct version of what I was going to reply with.

That said, I like the idea behind the OP. Just don't agree at all with the first four conclusions.

Some decent points.

I agree with you about bringing in some competition, but apparently they really like Jones. Personally, I'm concerned with the injury and kinda miss the Crocodile Punter.

I was very happy to have Orton last year, but his offseason performance this year has me concerned. My worries may be unfounded, but we ALL watched as Brad Johnson flubbed through Training Camp in his last year with us. We stuck with him and it cost us. He was horrible that year. I am probably drawing parallels incorrectly (especially since TC hasn't started yet), but if Orton looks as bad in TC as he did in OTAs, we really will need to dig for some options.

All signs are pointing to us not keeping a FB at all. Unless Vickers plays lights out in TC, we'll go with Rosario as our 4th TE instead. If both Rosario and Vicker fail to impress, there's a chance we could look elsewhere. Leach would be a nice pickup if we were running an offense that really used the FB, but he'll probably be signed by Miami by then. I don't think we want to use a FB, so I don't see us going after Leach( at the very least, not until TC runs it's course.)

4. Big, fat guy

I'm all about the new "speed" concept, and the 4-3 scheme of Kiffin and Marinelli. Love it. But we still need one big oaf to man the nose tackle "1 technique" postition on this team. I think we are done looking for DL guys and we are going to roll with who we have. I all seriousness, anyone we picked up now wouldn't be enough of an impact player to be worth bringing in.

Find one.

I think you are underestimating how well Harris handled returns. He's our main guy now. With our focus on TE's with Hanna and Escobar, we will be putting 3WR sets out on the field less. Right now, Harris is our clear #3, but even at that spot, he will see less time due to us having 2 TEs out there more. Even though Harris is leading, guys like WIlliams, Beasley and Coale will be battling for playing time. Harris is not so far ahead of the other guys that he's a lock at the #3. On ST however, he's clearly a difference maker. For the first time in forever, we pretty much have a dedicated returner and he's Harris.

I'm all over the PR guy. Somehow we will get a punter. Yes we could use a 0 technique NT IMO. We can live without one with what we have. We don't have to have a fullback in this offense but you need someone to play the role on occasion but that can be a F back.

How can you be premiere if you sucked in the previous year?

Couldn't stay healthy? There are few punters in the NFL who could take the hit he did and not get injured.

Recall also that he actually came back for a game on an emergency basis because Moorman got hurt. He was terrible in that game and went on IR soon after.

If you look at his limited play before the injury he was averaging 46 yards a kick. That's middle of the pack for NFL punters and certainly nothing to complain about from a guy who has only played parts of two seasons. Punters tend to get better with age. If he does that just a little, he will be pretty good.

Brandon Moore, Richard Seymour, and John Abraham are 3 vets on cheap deals I'd love to see added but this isn't Madden. Depth on the D-Line is one thing that really scares me about this upcoming year. If we get banged up bad again late in the year we're done again because signing guys off the street each week will never cut it.

I think we just need some big fat guys who can block...give me that and a healthy defense and I'm happier than Deon Sanders in a room made of mirrors
