What's the read here? Clowney, Jarrett, Clark, DLaw, Ford, all getting tagged. Conclusion or different interpretation of DL players value coz the two defensive players Mack and Donald play different positions but are paid almost identical. For example, in some eyes, DLaw is arguably a top 5 DLman but when you break his position down from DLman to DE it impacts his salary negatively. Other words, could DLaw be looking for a contract in line with DLmen as a whole vs Cowboys thinking DE. The same for Jarrett, is it possible his people are thinking DLmen or Donald ( DT ) type money vs Falcon thinking DT.

Not sure how many remember how it appears the owner bent over backward devaluing the safety position ( ironically it appears Earl Thomas is trying to reset it (lol) ). Makes me wonder if that what we're seeing here with DL position.

But the weirdest thing is seeing little or no attempt to get a handle on the out-of-control QB salaries.

Dline May be the biggest bust risk in the draft so teams want what’s proven. But two very elite players set the market higher than teams want to pay
Those who don’t get extended could see a shift if 3 or 4 of them hit the market next year at the same time

No, the Khalil Mack contract screwed up outside pass rushers contract negotiations.

All of these guys and their agents are using the Mack 23.5M per contract as the reference.

The problem is that none are on Khalil Mack's level. Offenses game plan against Mack. They don't game plan against DLaw. Mack does not rack up huge stats relative to these players but he gets double and triple team blocking.

Agent: My player's stats look similar to Mack's stats. We want the same contract.

Team: If you want that contract, get a time machine and bring us Lawrence Taylor in his prime...

The problem is Chi overpaid for Mack and prior to that the Giants overpaid for Vernon. This threw it all out of whack.

Each team is waiting for the other team to sign a deal to see how the market will shape up.

My guess it'll be like the Dez Bryant/Demaryius Thomas deals, where both signed similar deals on the same day,

Teams aren’t exactly singling up d-law on account the vast d line talent we possess. To act like he doesn’t get double and triple teamed or even gameplanned for is asinine. Ask any opposing offensive coordinator and Lawrence is one of the first things that comes out of their mouth.

But, yeah. They don’t gameplan for himz

“My players stats look better than Mack’s in recent history and he’s considerably better vs the run”
In fact, statistically he was more than double as effective vs the run over Mack in 2018.

If any offensive coordinator didn’t gameplan for Demarcus Lawrence, they’d be fired.

Saying he doesn’t get double teamed is like
When people claimed dez wasn’t still commanding a double team.

Except he was, even up until the very end.

Some occasional double teams is not game planning against.

Obviously offenses are always aware of the opponent's top pass rusher.

And that may be the hub all of these spokes are coming from. Can't raise all of the salaries when QB1 salaries are pulling down 16% of the cap. Something has to give. The NFL is becoming moronic paying Tier 2 and 3 guys Tier 1 money and few of the Tier 1QB's have won more than one ring and some, 0.

They're headed for a very interesting locker room when these highly paid QB's stink it up and are hauling down that much of the cap.

I don't think you understanding game planning against. A good pass rushers get some double teams blocking.

In 2017 defenses started single covering Dez, often with their #2 or #3 WR. Beasley got the double teams and sadly TWill or Butler often got the #1 CB.

Dez was so bad in 2017 that some CBs dropped coverage on him in anticipation of a run and Dez was actually not even covered with the ball still in Dak's hands. Dak tried to take advantage of it a couple of times but Dez was just loafing around and not looking for the ball.

I spend a lot of time studying game footage (All-22 and broadcast).

DLaw has made himself into a very good player, but he is not on the level of the elite pass rushers in NFL history.

Different schemes (4-3 vs 3-4). Hard to compare run defense for a 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB.

Tyrone Crawford, when he plays DE is a terrific run defender. Nobody is going to pay him 20M per.

However, it is a monster year for d-lineman in this years draft. Flat out loaded. Yeah, there's always risk, but man it is stacked.

It is a deep draft on the Dline but by far the hardest players to pick

It seems like there's a loosely coordinated effort among NFL owners to reign in salaries a bit on every position except quarterback.

Especially receivers and running backs. Owners are tired of diva receivers and the rapid decline of running backs from getting beaten up.

The read is finding guys who can harass the QB and win you the line of scrimmage are invaluable and in short supply.

Yeah, it's funny these guys will pay an average QB $20M but an impact DL has to jump through hoops. The QB market is the worst, but that's cool to ppl, but a DL wanting fair money is greedy.
