I did a deep dive in our run defense after the Lions blowout loss last season. Not only did I look at the Cowboys but also around the league:

-I discovered that bigger personnel teams were more effective against the run. Also, the top run defenses employed a 3-4 front. Wanted a 3-4 defensive HC or DC and to re-shape the front with bigger players within the front 7. Cowboys management decided to not make the switch and would rather keep continuity playing a similar 4-3 scheme.

-When I researched the Cowboys specifically, they averaged 4.8 yards per rush (third worst), gave up 25 rushing TD's (worst) and were dead last in red zone defense. They actually were 9th in 3rd down defense, which tells us, they are getting killed on the run downs.

Outside runs gave this team fits: Early on both Parsons/DLaw struggled to set the edge, Golston was far better when he replaced DLaw as the starter. Parsons got better as the season progressed. Diggs who was the last line of the outside defense struggled filling his gap. Zimmer started to use more down lineman to force runs inside to was effective.

Especially early on, our defensive tackles were getting completely pushed down the field. Signing out of shape, late street fa's was apart of the problem. Phillips looked better with the Bills, Joseph played much better later in the season. Mazi had some real good stretches, but struggled with consistency. He played far better in year 2 under Zimmer. The interior was awful early on, but their play did improve.

Our linebackers really struggled to get off of blocks, Wilson was awful early on taking several bad angles and not maintaining his gap responsibilities. Maintaining gap responsibilities was a common theme, many were playing hero football and not maintaining their run fits, this opened up huge cut back lanes.

Lastly, Cowboys were a terrible tackling team early on in the season, but got much better under Zimmer as the season progressed, became the 2nd best after week 7.

Fixing the run defense, isn't just about upgrading Mazi Smith, he is the easy target but it is the whole front:

-Defensive Ends have to effectively set the edge and force all the runs inside where there are more players to make the tackle.
-Defensive Tackles have to hold their ground, cannot be 3 yards down the field, have to get some tackles for loss.
-Linebackers have to make quicker reads and do a better job getting off of blocks
-Cannot play hero ball and run out of their gap responsibilities
-Must continue to be a strong tackling team
-Consider using bigger fronts on the obvious run downs.

You mentioned micah diggs and dlaw. 3 of our 4 all pro/pro bowl players. Wonder why I say this defense is cotton soft. Your best guys set the tone regarding run defense.

Micah Parsons' next deal could exceed mind-blowing amount per year

Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys reportedly have a lot of work to do before reaching a deal, but the latest rumors indicate the value could be higher than predicted.

Davenport points to B/R's Kurt Benkert hinting Parsons' next deal could "average $45 million per season."

He writes, "That kerfuffle doesn’t appear to have rankled Parsons too much, though. The soon-to-be 26-year-old showed up at voluntary workouts in a sign of good faith.

we dont even have to be good at run defense, just be average and our pass rush will take over.
If we can be middle of the pack. Still get the turnovers we did last few years. We will be fine. If the offense gets back to being explosive that also helps the run defense. Hard to stick with the run if we are scoring TD’. Our offense has to be much better in red zone

Wouldn’t say soft, but very undisciplined especially our DE’s.

Think that is their plan, force teams to throw against our pass rush

The run defense doesn’t have to be top 10.
Just get to the middle of the pack. And keep improving week to week.
The defense is good enough, with marginal DL improvements, they can help win games.

The DEs were a problem, yet most blamed Mazi. I was surprised they let Golston walk to depend on Kneeland and Turner to set the edge. Now the DE group is filled with Edge rushers and lacking impact at Base End. Maybe Solomon Thomas can help set the Edge.

Interested to see how Eberflus fixes this issue, but it does look like the run defense could use some more attention.

My brother,

I keep explaining you and hey you have every right to keep posting this stuff they changed out the entire defensive coaching staff for this very reason and not just once now twice in the last 3 seasons this time this ones here for a while because they're trying to build something so let's give it a chance before we poo on it and like you don't think that Matt Eberflus has been around long enough to know any of this that you wrote?

I'm pretty sure this defensive staff has a pretty good idea especially whitecotton along with Eberflus,

I mean I don't even know most of the other guys names but we even have an ex defensive coordinator as a special teams guy from San Francisco, i'm pretty sure they have a lot of knowledge on that side of the ball, and they can go back and watch everything from last year and figure out how to try to make it better this year including the beef lol

And truthfully we're not going know any of this has been upgraded until we see real games you can't play real defense against preseason offenses because most people are playing vanilla you're never going know how this will look until we give it about 4 to 6 weeks of regular season games, with game planning and then we'll kind of get an idea where this might go so nothing that happens in camp nothing that happens in preseason is really going tell us the truth the truth is be with the game plans and the strategizing and the schemes and the end game play calling for situational football then we will figure out if this stack has anything but it's will take a little while to see any proof on if things got better...
