24 million in the first three years? How about something like this, that wouldn't be bad at all.

2008: 2.5 million from signing bonus + 3.5 million base = 6.0 million cap hit
2009: 2.5 million from signing bonus + 6.0 million base = 8.5 million cap hit
2010: 2.5 million from signing bonus + 7.0 million base = 9.5 million cap hit

Flo's cap hit in 2007 was 7 million, it's not a big jump at all and it would keep Flo's increasing cap hit at least with the rate of the increasing cap total.

His base salary for 2008 almost certainly will be $830,00, or maybe $1 million. But if he's getting a big bonus, he won't need a $3.5 million base salary this year. I'm guessing his cap hit will be $3.5 million or less.

I could see scenario's where Flo's contract wouldn't count more than $2.5 Mil agains the cap in 08...

Exactly. Although I think it's probably around $3 million for 08.

Why do teams structure contracts like that? If you can fit it into the cap in the first year then aren't you doing yourself a a favor for the coming years? It seems that you would have to pay considerable more in 09 and 10 by taking a lower cap hit in 08, thereby handcuffing yourself in the future.

Every year, you want to maximize your salary cap. Would you rather not sign a free agent this year just so you can sign the same free agent next year? What if that player would have helped win a playoff game, or more regular season games this year? Given the ability to carry over any leftover cap room, it's much better to take smaller hits this year whenver possible -- unless you're just trying to spend enough to get to the team minimum salary.

I agree. We definitely need to start winning some P.O. games. But you know what this team reminds me of? The Colts. They established how to be a winning team and then had to establish how to be a playoff team to finally winning it all.

Not suggesting the 'boys winning it all in the next three years. But if you look at when Dungy took over the team. It was a matter of teaching them how to get over the hump. That being the pats.

For the 'boys it's getting over the sense of entitlement that some engaged in as well as getting over the underachieving mentality that's hung over this team.
Dungy couldnt even get over the hump in Tampa and you saw what happened the year after he left. But I see your point.

The cap rises every year so it is less of a % hit in the future. For teams like TB that are $43M under the cap it would make sense to take the cap hit now.

It's not a bad position actually. Being tight against the cap with a good team is much more preferable than being in cap hell with a bad team.

Couldn't agree more.

I don't see how anyone could possibly complain about locking up a Pro Bowl LT for 43 Million over 6 years when scrub like Kelly (DT Raiders 36 tackles and 1 sack in 07) just signed for 50 Million over seven years.

If that's the going rate for a player THAT average I hope we stay WAY far away from the FA market.

happy with the move. But I must say Flo does seem to have some inconsistant games.

For that money He better play hard every freaking game ( including playoffs!!!!) and get a hearing aid.

hate to break it to ya but 5 time pro bowl LT's don't grow on trees and they don't come cheap. protecting Romo is priority #1 and worth every dime.

exactly right

im very glad they signed him. I was thinking they were going to let him walk, but im glad i was wrong. Having a hole at LT can F up the entire offense.

now, if he can do something about those penalties...

Has anyone ever accused Al Davis of doing the smart thing? Come on! Him and Danny boy are the laughing stock of the nfl when it comes to money paid to players.

Now that is the question. Isn't it?

IMO, Dungy didn't get the chance to get them over the hump. But I see your point as well.
