a big contract generally means you are committed to the player for 3 years. after 3, you save money to cut the guy in most cases

Of course, folks who don't think Flo is worth the money really don't watch much football. Yes, he has trouble with speed rushers. So do all the LTs in the league outside the 2 or 3 best.

Nor do they understand there's very little if any chance he's gone. Chances are, if he plays at his current level and stays healthy he could be our starter for at least next year and maybe 2-3 years. Don't think he'd be the first OLman to play well into his mid 30's.

So what's the solution?

Let him play out the contract?

He won't play out the contract regardless. The 6 years on the deal are really like 3-4 years, and this is the 2nd year of his contract. However, If there is no cap (which seems likely), Flo will probably be renegotiating a smaller deal this offseason.

If there is cap, then there's no way we cut him and he plays out the next year, maybe two.

The question though is whether or not you think Free is better than him. If you do and start him then all that does is make a mess.

And Flo is 35 or 36. Hes already way into his 30s. The bottom is going to drop out on him at anytime.

Flozell has given up 7 sacks and has his usual share of stupid penalties.

If I'm GM I force myself to get younger by cutting Flo and starting Free at LT.

Draft at least 1-2 OT's who are big enough and athletic enough to play both LT and RT.

Stay away from RTO's = Right Tackle Only

If they strike out at RT there is no other spot for them on the line/roster.

If I'm a GM, I'm actually REALIST and I understand that LTs don't grown on trees and you need all the depth you can get on the o-line.

I'd love to see Free take the job from him but that would entail Free playing at a very high level to do so. All this "force ourselves to get younger" stuff is really dumb if it doesn't make us better.

Cutting Flo would be dumb beyond dumb. He may not be quit as good as he was but he holds down that very important spot pretty well. I want one more year of Flo, Columbo, and the emerging Free to feel comfortable at the tackle position. Draft a tackle fairly high and let him and Brewster develop next year. Then we will be in position to cut Flo in 2011 when it actually saves money on the cap, if there is one. Like it or not, Flo is still one of the best LTs around. You cannnot count on Free holding that spot down as good as Flo next year.

With all that being said, if they go out a sign a good FA LT and cutting Flo would relieve big salary cap $$$ in the future, then I'd be on board.

Flo is 34, he'll be 35 in May. If Free beats him out in camp next year, fine, i'm all for him starting. I really don't think that's gonna happen.

As far as where the bottom is, until it drops out you play the guy.

Ya think we are not gonna bring Brooking back because he's the basically the same age as Flo?

I'm all for drafting potential replacements, but that's a long way from getting rid of good vets.

As far as free, has he ever started a game at LT? We know he's a pretty good RT, but i'd like to see him win the LT job before i anoint the guy.

lol at Newman making 9 mil.

Disgusting...

I thought you loved Newman. And Ken Hamlin. And the entire secondary. Didn't you predict that the secondary would be the best in the entire league this season? "Book it. Write it down." or somesuch if I recall.

You can search my old posts and I might be w/ a bunch of people, but I was against the Roy trade. Mostly because Detroit was not going to pay him the next year and he would probably be gone. I hated giving an average RB in Marion Barber a big contract. I preferred tendering him at a level other teams might have bitten on and kept the major money. I hated the Hamlin extension because the interceptions didn't mean he was a good safety. Old and slow Flo was a huge mistake at his age and because of the penalties. I loved the TO signing till we gave him the non year to year contract. I loved trading down to get the extra 1 in the Losman trade. Now, I will say Miles is the real deal and should be paid much like the numbers in comparison to the position like Romo was paid. Liked not paying Canty big money, but it sucks we don't get anything for him. Of course Ratliff at any price is a steal. Newman extension I was in agreement with. I thought he would hold up better.

If there's no cap next season, this is most likely FLO's last year with the Cowboys.

And he won't be alone.

Exactly. It is strickly a business decision. If there's a cap, no way they can't cut more than one, at the most, because the cap prevents them from doing it. If there's no cap, then they have the freedom to get rid of albatross contracts and they will take advantage of that.

They'd be fools not to do it.

Flo isn't that good anymore. He is the biggest liability on that OL by far.

Kosier and Gurode are probably our best OL and both are good but not dominating players.

I think if you sub in Free for Flo this OL becomes much more athletic and less prone to error.

I wouldn't mind drafting an interior OL high to compete with Davis. Davis is just so much feast or famine that it makes it hard to get a consistent running game going. He also has a tendency to let guys get in on Romo. I personally believe he is better suited for RT with all that mass, incredible strength and long arms. He wasn't as bad in pass protection at LT that people seem to think he was. We were going to put him at LT if we didn't re-sign Flo in 2008 so the staff must think he can still play tackle.

Our team will be better the moment he is gone. He gives up way too much pressure and then there are all the penalties and sacks - I think somewhere around 19 this season.

Precisely. Flo may not be a great player anymore but he is going nowhere. Don't reveal yourself as cap and football ignorant and suggest otherwise.

A motivated and fresh Haynesworth is a force in this league and he was breathing fire on Sunday. I mostly saw him bullrush Kosier. I didn't see him doing too much against Gurode who actually plays with great strength due to low pad level. He is one of the best 1-on-1 NT blockers in the league.

Haynesworth was causing trouble on those short yardage plays but I think Garrett needs to go back to the drawing board there.

Adam where are you?

I'm right here, wondering why -- a few days before we play a game to decide the division title and a week or two before we begin the playoffs -- people are arguing about who makes too much money and whom we should cut.

Because there's only so much you can say about the upcoming game before it becomes the same thing said 150 different ways. What hasn't been discussed about the next game yet ? What color underwear they're going to come out with ?

There's nothing wrong with engaging in some speculation about the future of the team. It's one of the best part of the sport and what keeps it interesting during the week.
