I was on my way home last night from work and was listening to 93.7 The Fan out of Pittsburgh. The topic was Flozell in his first preseason game against the Lions. You should hear the disappointment in the fans up here. I personally watched the game with Flozell (#71) and could not believe how much he has regressed. He was getting beat consistently. It wasn't pretty.

Back to my point. The host set up the topic by wanting to know from callers if Flozell has already soured on them after one preseason game. The one caller I caught before pulling into my drive mentioned that their was a reason why Dallas let the aging Adams go. Gee, ya think? Also said that the Steelers front office figured Adams was going to be a band-aid for their inconsistent O-line.

To sum it all up, Squeeler fans believe their backups can handle the job better than Flozell.

You still miss him? I sure the heck don't. Aging Tackles, or O-lineman in general are like aging Centers in the NBA. Once they begin their decline, it's not a little bit here and there, it's like a frickin landslide. It all comes down at once.

thanks for the update. Did they draft any O lineman in Pittsburgh?

Center Pouncey out of Florida. He's already taking half the snaps from starter Justin Hartwig.

But, but,... Yeah, Doug Free is going to do very nicely for us. :starspin

All those who were berating our staff for letting Flozell go will be singing their praises when they see that Flo just isn't the same player he was 5 years ago.

I can't wait to hear all of the "experts" who were talking about how much we would rue losing Adams. :lmao2:

Nate Newton & Galloway were just saying yesterday that it was a mistake to cut him.

Colombo being out has fans in a panic. The sky is falling!

So let me get this straight? You mean to tell me that this staff knows what they are doing? They are not imploding in absence of The Tuna? Impossible, can't be.

And as we all know, people who call in to sports radio aren't at all likely to overreact to what they see in the first preseason game.

I expect Flozell to be perfectly serviceable for the Steelers this year, as he almost certainly would have been for us. I still think cutting him was the right decision.

Yep, there was some rueing going on.

He should have been gone sooner, IMO.

Hopefully he ends up being the starting LT by the team the raper gets back on the field and because of Flo he gets the same treatment Eli got in his last preseason game.

Yeah, I like that.

I was one who didn't think releasing Flo was a good idea. Not because I didn't think Free could handle it but because I figured he'd be quality depth at OT & maybe G if needed. Even if he's struggling a bit now in Pitt I still think he'll be better than Brewster, Young, & Barron if we needed to actually throw him into the lineup...

I disagree, I think the timing couldn't be better. I don't think Free was ready at the start of last season. I also think him filling in at RT gave him the game experience he needed before having to face the better pass rushers you see at LT.

I think things worked out perfect timing wise.

Fletch I heard he played right guard? Either way yea I heard he sucked bad. I met him last week up at camp at St. vincents,i was jogging there and i astopped where they were at and he was getting water I said Go Cowboys to him and he winked lol

Knowing Flo he probably sat on his arse all offseason.

He'll eventually get into shape and do a good job for them.

We upgraded the LOT position this off season.

I don't care what Jamie Dukes says about it either.

Was it right guard or right tackle? Either way, it is an adjustment. Plus he has to learn a new scheme. He is not going to learn all those things overnight.

Dallas did not cut Flozell due to performance. It was a combination of his performance and his cost. Dallas would have probably kept him around if they could have done so at the rate Pittsburgh is paying him, which was not going to happen.

That was my thinking. As a SB contender in a year without a cap, you'd think we could afford one really high priced back-up.

But you have to realize they're often more to these decisions than we know about. Maybe they approached Adams early after the season about a deminished role in 2010 and a new diminished contract? Perhaps he balked and gave them the impression he would not care to stay HERE as a reserve.

Or maybe the felt his time in football is at an end.

I don't think Admas performance the other night has to be indicitive of what he'll d for the Steelers. He has to get the chance to get in game shape. We'll see.

Isn't that what RW is going to be?

Absolutely - 1 pre-season game from a guy who just signed - and probably wasn't all that diligent in his off-season workouts - is certainly no indication of the type of player Adams can become for Pitt.

Too many people think Adams was released b/c he sucked and this is simply not true. As was mentioined above, Adams was released due to cost - which is hard to imagine in an uncapped year - plus the potential of Free combined with Adams performance. Yes, Adams performance played a role in the decision, but it certainly was not the primary factor, IMO.

I was not one of those who thought Adams should have been cut, but I did believe it was time to let Free take over. This may not have been a workable solution inside VR, but I think keeping Adams would have been the better insurance policy.
