Food for Thought... Our RB future...

What would you do if:

You could sign BOTH Barber and Jones to matching solid contracts for 3 or 4yrs each

or

Draft Darren McFadden overall number 1?

Where I once leaned toward the latter, I am a huge Marion Barber fan and with the selection of an elite RB such as McFadden or Slaton I think it mitigates MB3's future here in Dallas... I think Julius is the easier replaced back no question, and I also think he thinks he's gonna get a blockbuster deal somewhere else. I tend to think Marion could as well.

Julius is decent and our tandem is EXTREMELY productive as is... we could go defense again or go after the best college wideout or DT or do anything else we wanted in the draft. We could select another RB with similar skills to Julius if we decided not to resign him, but I think MB3 BELONGS here, and I believe that with serious conviction.

I love McFadden, but there are no guarantees and what we have works and works extremely well. IF you draft McFadden, he gets 90% of the carries, and Barber is no longer in the plans clearly.

Gimme some thought on this?

I'd take McFadden in a heartbeat.

But there's no reason we can't have McFadden AND MB3.

At this point, I think Barber is here. The question is who will be sharing time with him...because I don't think it's going to be Julius.

The percentage move is to take another player with the early pick (CB?) and use the second number 1 on a replacement for Julius.

So take a lesser player cuz it's for "need" and pass on a possible elite player?

Just cuz we "need" a CB more (we don't really) doesn't mean you take one earlier then he should be taken. If there's an elite RB and a Solid CB available, you take the elite RB.

That would be the "percentage" move.

The thought of McFadden and MB3 in our backfield gives me shivers. How scary would that be.

if cleveland has another 30 plus points game in them, then we are not getting the number one pick. what if we let julius jones go, and sign michael turner as an unrestricted free agent? there is no way in hell the chargers would franchise turner with ladanian tomlinson around. turner's style should work well with mb3.

I guess unless we have the top pick or land McFadden, I'd like to get Turner to team up with Barber.

I'd then look to use the top picks on CB, WR, and DL.

I agree with the post by Woods. I'd take McFadden in a minute if we had the top pick in the draft but would hate to have us trade 2 first round picks to move up to the top for him. This draft should allow up to solidify our team by adding a top notch CB and another speedy WR. I like both starting WR's from Michigan as well as the California WR.

My dream scenario would be somehow getting both Antoine Cason and McFadden.

Make it happen Jerry!

We should keep Marion no matter if we keep Julius or use a top pick on McFadden or another back.

Marion is just someone the cowboys should keep. Not only is he a weapon but he is a spark plug for our team and a demoralizer to opposing teams.

Let me start by saying, I watched McFadden for the first time the other night, and my jaws hit the floor. This guy is just incredible.

Now, let me say I rewatched the game last night, specifically to watch Barber and Julius Jones. I know people don't want to say this, but I think MBlll is a franchise back, and I also think he can carry the load.

I know we want to believe that JJ has all this speed (which he does) but what good is it when you can't get to the second level? MBlll is a guy who had more speed than I originally thought, I didn't see that skinny DB catching him when he broke loose in that Miami game, and it appeared as though Barber slowed down 10 or 15 yards before the end zone.

He's better at hitting the corner than JJ, which is shocking to me actually. I know people are tired of the hype over Barber, but I had to have been one of the last few fans that has finally come on board with Barber.

Now - since it's 5:48 in the morning, allow me to take my time here.
Do we need an all world RB when we have a pretty dang good one on the team? The issues we had the other day in our passing game, they were shadowing TO and Witten and the other 2 were barely getting seperation, and usually just couldn't get opened.

We MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT A FUTURE WR CAUSE TO WON'T BE HERE FOR EVER AND GLENN IS INJURY PRONE, not to mention getting old. Romo has proven that he doesn't have to have an "LT" type back on his team to survive. I really don't feel like doing the research right now, but if I remember correctly, Emmitt was the only super star running back who's won the SB in ages.

I honestly don't think we need a STAR running back to help us win a SB, I think MB3 is good enough to get it done by himself. But if we don't start addressing this *playmaking WR* situation, we are going to pay the price.

Now if some of you don't think we can survive without getting a star RB, ask Indy, Steelers, New Cheatland, and I can go on and on. MB3 is as good, better, or just a notch below most of the runners on those SB teams.LT is considered the best of the best out there, and he's yet to make it to the Suber Bowl.

IMO, if we were to have the #1 choice, I would trade down if possible try to pick up another 1st for the following year, I will not except 2nds and 3rds cause we're getting to the point, that we won't have room for these other players on our team. I'm no scouting expert, i'll leave it to you brilliant folks out there, but I would go after the biggest baddest WR, DL, or CB out there.

I think we can address one of those positions in FA next year, and I would go after the best CB or DL in free agency, and that would eliminate 1 of the 3 positions we need to attack in the 1st round.

I'm only saying that I believe in MBlll. Don't struggle with yourselves over wondering if he can carry the load. He can!! If he can't, then let's find out this year if he can or not. Our problems are not on offense anyways, even with our average WRs (not named TO or the injured Glenn)

When Romo has to scramble like a mad man, it's cause 2 guys are being doubled, and the others aren't getting opened.

Draft a WR and CB or DL, and allow MBlll to shine as the starter.

I love Barber, but there's always a reason backup RB's have better average per carries.

Heck, we were all enticed by Troy Hambrick's bruising 5.0 ypc average.

I don't think a backup has even carries to the starter. People were still affraid of Emmitt back then, and could care less about "what do Voluntary Hambrick" did.

But when you have star Line Backers calling out your "back up" running back, I wouldn't necessarily call him your typical back up. :)

If McFadden is there when we draft, take him. But with the recent performance of the Browns looking on the upside, I just don't see us having the chance. BPA is what I support, unless its a LB, lol. Fill needs in free agency.

The Saints found room for Bush and Deuce, I believe we could for McFadden and the Barbarian if it where to happen. McFadden is a very verstile player. But I'm not all that optimistic on us getting that top pick anymore, the Falcons are far worse than the Browns, and there are a few more in the running.

I would like us to draft a CB or DT next year.

Let Julius walk and use Thompson as the backup RB.

Maybe draft an OT if Free/McQuistan cannot replace Flo.

I agree with Clove, in that our biggest needs right now are CB and WR. However, I don;t think you can pass on a talent like McFadden. IF we are able to get him, then we should taje him. Jones is walking when his contract expires and MBIII can play the same role behind McF if need be. He would be great insurance against injury.

'Sides, MBIII has great trade potential if McF does come here.

Initially I thought if we got a very high pick, we'd use it on McFadden but now I'm not so sure. Cowboys obviously won't re-sign Julius so we replace him with McFadden but that means less carries for MBIII. I doubt we can afford keep MBIII because of cap considerations as a backup RB when he becomes a FA after 08 season.

I also no longer buy into the view "if it works don't fix it" cause in 2nd half when we need control the football we rely on Romo to get us the yardage or MBIII. JJ has speed but lacks vision & too often doesn't get the yardage. I think Cowboys keep falling back on this statement cause JJ won't handle well any change which he perceives as a demotion.

So our options are:

1. Draft McFadden but only first Cleveland's first rounder is enough,

2. or trade Cleveland's first rounder for any team's (if it a top 10 pick) first & 2nd rounder this year & their first rounder in 08.

3. Sign SD's Michael Turner as our starter but we first better ensure MBIII isn't a legit starting RB who can consistently carry the ball at least 20 times a game for a whole season and for several years down the road.
