This image and thread is a reminder of one of the funniest threads ever at the Zone. Hopefully it is a good bit of information too.

This is the Passing Tree. Just about every WR and TE gets introduced to this at some point in their development.

The Passing Tree is the number system used for the passing routes. All routes are the same for the X, Y, and Z-receivers. The route assignments depends on the coaching preference. This system uses has all EVEN number routes towards the center of the field, while ODD number routes are towards the sidelines. Below are the routes used in this playbook:

ROUTE NAMES: #1 - Quick Out. Drive out 5 yards then 90 degrees and drift to sidelines.

#3 - Deep Out. Drive out 10 yards then 90 degrees and drift to sidelines.

#5 - Flag Route. Drive out 8 yards, show hand fake and look back at QB, then sprint to deep flag. (out route)

#7 - Shoot Route (Chair Route) Sprint up to 4 or 5 yards then 45 degrees (or 90 degrees) for 2 strides then straight up the field. DO NOT drift to the middle of the field!

#9 - Streak Route (Fly Route) Can be a straight sprint "go" route off the line of scrimmage or can be incoporated with a one stride 45 degree "chair" after 8-10 yards. See Shoot Route above.

#8 - Post Route. Drive out 8 yards, show hand fake and look back at QB, then sprint to deep post.(in route) Opposite of Flag Route above.

#6 - Curl Route. Drive out 12 yards, slow and gather yourself, curl in towards QB, establish a wide stance and frame yourself. Find an open or void area.

#4 - Drag Route. Drive out 3 strides then drag on a 45 degree (or 90) angle to the opposite tackle.

#2 - Slant Route. Drive out 3 strides then slant 45 degrees. This is a timing route, Expect the ball immediately!

#0 - Quick Hitch Route. Drive out two strides then come back to QB on a 45, establish a wide stance and frame yourself.

Good stuff Hos. I was particularly interested in the post route with the look back at the QB then go. I will go to my grave believing that head fakes, look backs and "selling routes" are the difference in getting open.

Example - if a professional receiver in the NFL is lined up at the five yard line and has man to man coverage, I simply cannot understand how he couldn't sell a quick slant with body and head and then beat his man to the corner every single time, especially with a pump fake. What convinces me of this is when I watch players in shuttle drills at the combine and see the incredible quickness they all possess.

This doesn't match the 7 in the diagram, which is a post-corner.

Like bsheeern said, there are many different variations of passing trees. But in a numbered passing tree, the rule of thumb is even numbers go toward the middle of the field, odd numbers go toward the sideline, and the higher the number, the deeper the route. The specifics vary, but most of them stick to that system.

Where's the 30-yard slant

:D

Alright, I've seen enough of this 30-yard slant ****.

I keep seeing the references and don't have a clue what the deal is.

I planted one of those in my backyard.....It really hasen't done as well as my run the ball bush. You should see how well my top 5 defense is growing.

It's all I got at 5am.

Hopefully your passing tree is doing better than my shoe tree. All it gives me is lefties.

That is the one. BTW, one reason I think it is so funny is how badly Mike Williams ended up.

Mike Williams, Steve Smith, & Dwayne Jarrett have sworn me off of USC WRs. In college, all 3 were amazing but in the pros on Smith has had any success but not nearly what he had in college.

I thought Mike Williams might make the switch to a Jay Novacek-type TE. I really had high hopes for Jarrett though but he has been a non-entity for the Panthers.

I don't know if anyone noticed but I had very little to say about the draft this year. I keep getting them wrong anyway so I'll just :zipit:

With shoe trees, you have to plant a left and a right so they can cross polinate. Don't forget to spray them from time to time.

Sorry for getting off track.
