What type of contract do you think it would take to keep Murray? I think the key here is to find a balance in that the team will only be paying off Romo's contract when time is due and not fall into the late 1999---trap; paying for stars with no chance to compete (Emmitt/Deion post Aikman, etc.).

If Romo plays for 2 more years his contract is easy to get rid of. Split over 2 years the cap hit will be less than 8m per year. If he plays in 2017 it will be a breeze. Plus by 2017 the cap will be close to 160m.

Murray should get 7m a year if he wants an effective 2yr deal OR 5m if he wants a real 4yr deal

I like the 7/2 but he wouldn't go for that, even the 4/20. The Romo hit will come and the team has done good managing that aspect this time around. It's just the young QB aspect that will show itself in a few seasons that will really answer this thing. I want Romo to get a SB and felt the team let the ideal time slip through their fingers this season! NE/SEA were weak SB teams tbh and we had more talent (overall).

I don't think any teams are that strong or are really getting better. Dallas has good window the next couple years and actually has a lot of room to grow on the defensive side.

Murray has a big decision to make about getting max dollars or giving Dallas a break and keeping the band together.

We say that now, but look how that 13-3 turned out...I know ;) The team does have a "potentially" easy schedule with NFC South/AFC East but we were also relatively healthy, made timely TOs, etc.but most importantly, had Romo almost all year. That was damn luck if I ever saw it and why I'm even more frustrated at the lost opp @ the SB when he was healthy in the playoffs with Dez "just chillin" outside until needed. The team shouldn't rest on it's laurels in thinking the same formula will just will us back into the playoffs/SB. That is what signing Murray means to me (again 50/50) when thinking about the lack of talent on D and missed opps in the playoffs.

Where does anybody get "reason to think" we can run the ball well without Murray? We have not in the past. And I want to know who (though cheaply) will step up and keep our ground game as good as it was last season. Yes, Murray will cost us. Just as will Dez and Romo and Witten and the O line. But since when does quality ball-running come cheap?

Penny side and pound foolish. Strange how we can play ever body else but not Murray, our reason for most of our success last season.

Probably because we led the league in yards before contact on runs.

I've watched T J Yeldon do some pretty good things the past couple of years. He makes plays and should be able to be drafted with a reasonable pick.

I would say letting your 26 yr old AP POY RB walk away is a pretty bold move. The guy led us to a 12-4 record after years of great passing yards and multiple 8-8 records. The only thing that changed was the commitment to the running game. Murray has plenty of wear left on his tires.

all indications ar the Cowboys are working on a deal to resign Murray

Always follow the money. They should have Dez in hand with a verbal commitment to X dollars. Knowing this you allow Ro, Murray, Free, Parnell et al shop their wares. Some if not all will allow us to negotiate afterwards. Then you know what you can spend. They should have a good idea even if only a reasonably thought out range of money necessary.

For me Dez is a must. Murray is a want. One of Free or Parnell is a want is not a must. One of those will likely walk and likely Parnell. My guess is Murray will be priced out of our market. Durant will sign. My guess is Ro will get more money here. I have little idea about Carr. I suspect Mo is on the roster since he's not a FA.

They'll restructure to get what they think is a competitive team.

If Dez would get done before March 2nd, Dallas could use the Transition tag on Murray. That would limit the risk on Murray to a one year commitment, all be it an expensive year.

There is much more to the story than that. Paying the salary he will likely want lessens the pretty bold part. Especially when he plays RB.
