If we pay Dak big, do we have money left over to fill all the other gaps we have? Cap is decreasing this year. Will it increase the following year? The NFL is betting on everyone who stopped watching this past year because of Covid to return. It's my experience that when someone fills their time with something else, it's hard to go back to what you're used to. It'll be interesting to see if the NFL returns to what it was. I don't think it will but we'll see.
That really isn't the question. The real question is are we smart enough to fill all the other gaps we have. Multiple teams (two in our own division in the Commanders and Giants) have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that just signing a bunch of high dollar free agents doesn't automatically make you a contender. Hell with those two it hasn't even made them a legit playoff team. The only reason the Ratscums made the playoffs this year was Dak getting hurt. Otherwise they finish a distant second to the Cowboys in the division. Making Dak's deal work under the cap is relatively easy..,
Year 1 1 million salary 25 million prorated bonus
Year 2 6 million salary 25 million prorated bonus
Year 3 13 million salary 25 million prorated bonus
Year 4 20 million salary 25 million prorated bonus - 5 million roster bonus
Year 5 25 million salary 25 million prorated bonus - 5 million roster bonus
That's 200 million over 5 years. 125 million bonus.. guarantee the first three years. 145 million.
Gives him the highest annual value title for his agent to crow about and cuts his cap number to less than it was in 2020 over the first two seasons and even in year three it would be lower than the franchise tag cost this year. Gives him monster salaries in years 4 and 5 if the new CBA and TV deals go as expected while putting $125 million in his bank account tomorrow.
Done.
