Things could be a whole lot worse.
For example:
You could be a fan of the Panthers, whose QB found even more ways to self-destruct and completely humiliate himself on Sunday, to the point where the booing got exponentially louder on every dumb throw he made. I saw this game here in Australia and it was tough to watch, even as someone with no rooting interest.
You could be a fan of the Bears, whose wildly overhyped superstar recruit threw four picks and looked exactly like the guy who has a 17-21 record as a starter. Throw in the loss of the heart and soul of your defence for the whole season and depression is surely soon to set in.
You could be a fan of the Cardinals, who looked atrocious at home against a very average 49er ballclub and may already be suffering a from post-Superbowl hangover. If Warner gets hurt (that should be WHEN not if), this team could collapse in a hurry.
You could be a fan of the Bills, who found a new way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory against the Pats. I know Brady is a genius, but there is no way on this earth you should lose a 24-13 lead with 5 mins to go in a game you have pretty much owned. Plus as a fan you have to be holding your breath over the inevitable TO explosion (and it will come, we all know it, even the TO apologists can't deny it's going to happen at some stage this season).
My point is, it's no bad thing to be a Cowboys fan right now. Sure, the run D against the Bucs was less than impressive to say the least, and I'm not entirely happy about Felix the Cat's seeming propensity for injury, but when your QB has a career day and three receivers virtually written off by the so-called experts do whatever they wanted against the Tampa Bay secondary, the special teams look awesome and the offensive line plays for the most part like the monsters they are, I for one am feeling pretty damn good to be a Cowboy fan right about now.
Yeah, I know, the Giants are coming to town. And there is certainly a chance that this first week was just a mirage and NY will give us a severe reality check. But I'm not so sure about that - there's just something about the attitude of this group I'm really liking right now, and I believe they are ready to step up to the challenge.
I'm certainly not going to tell anyone what they should and shouldn't say. That they shouldn't whine and complain or be pessimistic about our chances. But for me, I'm just happy for this season to get underway and hopeful of what the future might bring.
It's great to be a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Things could be a lot worse.
