For those who think Carimi can fill our RT spot

That brings up an interesting point. Is this whole "don't grab a RT or Guard" thing a product of value or a combination of value vs. the salary that type of pick commands? I'm just wondering if, in general, the landscape may change on picking those positions that high when a rookie cap is established.

Good post and a rookie cap could have impact on future decsions like that. But not as much from my point of view.

IMO, a team benefits less having an All-Pro at certain positions.

Here's the impact of a team's 22 starters in my order:

QB, RB, ROLB, NT, LOT, WR, CB, CB2, WR2, LOLB, OC, TE, FS, SS, DE, DE, ROT, OG, OG, MLB, MLB, FB.

I'd only use a 1st rd pick, especially top 10 or 15, on a player to fill one of the first ten starting spots.

When I watched them in the bowl game, he wasn't doing anything other than owning guys on a regular basis. Wisconsin lost because they can't throw/catch.

Thats been Wisconsin's weakness for years and years. They were actually much better at it this year than they normally are.

In the bowl game however, I think they lost -because- they went away from the run game and play action pass and decided to go for that two pointer out of shotgun formation.

They shoulda handed the ball to John Clay and stormed it in there because when Clay finally started getting the ball late against TCU, he was doing things with it.

Kind of an off-topic rant on my part...I keep telling myself it's too good to be true that we'll land Carimi or Moffitt or maybe even Wisconsin's OC Paul Chryst.

Carimi is a quality player but vastly overrated on this board.

Carimi looked stellar next to Moffitt but not so great when in one on ones or playing minus Moffitt next to him.

Carimi is probably going 25-35. He is battle-tested and tough but rates at best the 4th best athlete at OT.

Not true. From the reports I read Carimi was quite dominant at the senior bowl practices.

Amazing how the pass rushers look good in 1 on 1 drills with the lanes 8 miles wide on either side of the OT.

The games will be 11 on 11 with traffic for the DL to deal with.

NFL games will more resemble his games at Wisconsin or the actual Senior Bowl game than it will a 1 on 1 drill.

Exactly.

With a longer season (18 games) next year and an unexplosive (OLD) offensive line except for Doug Free, here's my take:

First Round: Although OT Tyson Smith is young (just turned 20yrs old in Dec), he's got excellent technique, quick feet, and is strong as a moose. Yes, he's underweight somewhat but he'll put on additional muscle in a short time. I have NO problem with the Boys drafting Tyson at Pick #9. He'll be an All-Pro in his second year and a fixture at LT for years. He may have to INTERN at RT for 1 yr but he's LT material and would be a STEAL at pick #9.

Round 2: Benjamin Ijalana OG (6'4" 320lbs) from Villanova. He's the real deal. Put him at Left Guard next to Doug Free (LT/6'6" 320lbs) and Andre Gurode (Center/6'4" 318lbs) and Leonard Davis (Right Guard/6'6" 355lbs) and Tyson Smith (RT/6'6" 300lbs) and we'd have a huge dominating OL again.

Round 3: Kenrick Ellis NT (6'5" 338lbs) or Jerrell Powe NT (6'2" 331lbs). We all know why we need a mammoth NT on our defensive line. Enough said. Let's go play some PHYSICAL football again!!!

Round 4: Kevin Sheppard ILB (6'2" 250lbs) or Nate Irving ILB (6'1" 242lbs) to provide some ILB depth. We all know that Sean Lee will be ready to take over for Keith Brookings but will Brook want to backup or retire.

Round 5: John Clay RB (6'1" 255lbs) . Bruiser from Wisconsin that played at RB but could play FB as well. A huge stud that the Cowboys have lacked for years but the top tier teams always have.

Round 6: Allen Bradford RB (5'11" 235lbs). Another big back for depth and to pound the rock behind a HUGE OL for 18 games.

Round 7: Tejay Johnson FS (6'0" 212lbs). Started TCU's last 36 games at FS on a defense that LED the nation in total defense for 3 straight years!!!

Just so you know it's Tyron Smith ;)

I like him a lot too, but I think it will take a year or two in an NFL weight lifting program before he's ready to compete. With his physical skill set it would be worth the wait, and I would be perfectly fine with taking him at 9.

The fact that he won't be as pro ready as somebody like Carimi is going to turn a lot of people off him, but that's short sightedness IMO. I'll glady take somebody who takes a few years to get going, but ends up a Pro Bowler as opposed to someone who is a steady solid performer, but has nowhere near the potential of Smith.

Plus it usually takes rookie olinemen awhile to start playing at a high level anyway.

umm who wouldnt? ;) problem is this isnt a gurantee not many draft picks are if any but to basically draft a kid at 9 then potentially redshirt him for a year or 2 is not really a option this team could afford.

I would very much like to wait until the combine to see what this kid does. Because without a doubt outside of a handfull of posters on this board (or any fan message board) can actually judge "talent" and how it translates to the NFL especially when it comes to lineman . i mean we all think we do because we read a scouting report or watched a game or two.

But unless you can guarantee that columbo is healthy and has a bounce back year or somehow there is a new CBA and we are able to upgrade the line, Then I just don't see us going in this direction.

Not trying to call you out cover2 i'm just going on what ive read about this kid and him not being ready to play straight away that's all.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what this guy is talking about. Carimi looked excellent in one-on-one drills at the Senior Bowl, let alone in actual games.

If there was any "Top Tier" prospects that looked shaky in drills, it was Castanzo and Solder.

this kid is SOLID. I watched 5 Wisconsin games including one in person where MSU beat them this year and the kid was virtually flawless. His feet are top notch, speed is adequate and has a little mean streak. Can we trade down to 13-16ish and still get him? What would that get us, an extra 3rd rounder?

To go from 9 to 16 using JJ's chart is a difference in value of 1350 points to 1000 points. A 350 point draft pick is a 2nd rounder, the #55 pick.

Please note that JJ's chart is more front end loaded than more "modern" draft value charts, which claim the higher draft choices aren't worth as much b/c of the expense of the highest draft choices.

Just on pure blocking ability I thought Carimi schooled Solder

You, Thought. From what i seen it looked like Solder did good if not better than Carimi in Blocking and running defenders past the QB.

With a rookie salary cap, which will happen, the expense is no longer a problem.

The Cowboys may not draft Tyron Smith, but he has Pro Bowl potential at LT.

He will become the starter at some point during the season, at a minimum.

He's worth the 9th pick, and I'm saying that banking on him weighing 303 or 305 at the combine. He could be 310 by the season if he checks in at 300-305.

Clay Shriver? :lmao2:

I agree he's not ready to start right away. Four years from now I think he'll be a Pro Bowl caliber player though.

He has great feet, amazing agility, and he plays nasty. The only thing he needs is to learn better technique (which all rookie olinemen need), and to gain weight.

Time will tell on how he turns out, but I wouldn't be upset if he ended up a Cowboy.
