Actually projecting our final roster is really too easy at this point. We forget the Cowboys already moved out a lot of dead wood when they cut/traded or failed to resign 10 players out of a 53 man roster; that's about a 19% turnover rate. Gone are JuliusJones/TThompson/Hoyte/Glenn & Ferguson/Ayodele/Fasano/Reeves/Jones/KeithDavis (only Davis was somebody they would have wanted to keep).
The 10 players have been replaced by FelixJones/TashardChoice/Zack Thomas/M.Bennett/MikeJenkins/OrlandoScandrick/AdamJones/EricWalden are certainly upgrades over those departed. So, unless I forgot somebody we've cut/somebody we've added, there only 2 slots max which available. The decision rests on how/where they will be distributed.
Was going to say here's my list of "bubble" players. But the reality is that none of our undrafted/unsigned players are a threat to any of the guys who were on the roster at the end of the 07 season. My best guess is DL Bowen & OG/C Proctor are on the bubble. The problem is that no undrafted FA player nor any vet FA has shown enough to become a threat to anybody on the roster. We may not be happy with the play of Burnett, Carpenter and a few others, but there's no way we cut them unless we've got a better player to replace them. That still leaves us with 2 slots to fill & their ability to play ST is a big part of the decision. It does surprise me how few, if any, of the players we brought in have looked any good.
Best guess at this point what we will do:
1) carry 7 CBs - Newman/Henry/Jenkins/Adams/Scandrick/Oglesby/Ball
2) carry 5 S's - Hamlin/RWilliams/Brown/Watkins/Davis
Added personnel at those 2 positions uses up the 2 slots still avaible.
or
3) carry 3 QBs - Romo/Johnson/Bartel or pick up a young experienced
vet
4) carry 6 WRs - only if Amendola or another WR steps it up or a good WR suddenly becomes available; doubt if latter happens
5) carry 2 FBs - if Cruz or Coleman show good ST skills
6) carry an extra LB if George T. steps it up
BTW: I really do think there's every possibility Jerry is keeping an ear to the ground re trading for a need player who can help us (not talking about a WR) particularly a pretty good vet who can play several OL positions, particularly at C or a QB.
