Gates turned eyes when he covered 40 yards in 4.37 seconds, sharing the best time with Ricardo Lockette of Fort Valley State. One report said Gates' footwork around the cones was excellent and his ability to track passes over his shoulder separated him from other receivers from big schools. His smooth routes and sure hands put him among the top receivers working out.
He had a vertical leap of 40 inches, which one writer said had the Combine been held in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Gates might have bumped his head on the Nike board.
On a family note, Gates' time was better than his cousin Bernard Scott, an ACU ex who ran a 4.43 at the 2009 combine, but he didn't threaten another ex-Wildcat, Johnny Knox, who was timed in 4.29 at the same Combine two years ago.
