Former NFL Punter And Kicker Russell Erxleben Charged In Alleged Ponzi Scheme

Russell Erxleben is a former NFL kicker and punter that you’ve never heard of. In 1979, he was a first round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints, playing for five seasons in the NFL (plus one 52-yard punt for the Detroit Lions in 1987). In 1977 while at the University of Texas, he made a 67-yard field goal, which still stands as the NCAA record.

Erxleben’s short-lived NFL career eventually gave way to Ponzi schemes, except Erxleben was the Ponzier, and not the Ponzied. Back in 1999, Erxleben scammed investors out of $36 million and earned himself an 84-month prison sentence, a $1 million fine and another $28 million in restitution charges. But after his release in 2005, Erxleben hopped right back on the Ponzi train and began scamming some more investors, to whom he conveniently forgot to mention that he was a convicted felon for, uh, scamming investors.

1) I've heard of him. He was a top notch punter at UT. The author presumes a bit much.

2) Financial, or white collar criminals, are handled too delicately within the justice system, as if their transgressions are somehow not as onerous as, say, a common thief. Might his prior experience of being slapped on the wrist not served as a deterrent here?

3) If you get a call out of the blue from somebody purported to be connected to a prominent person offering you a surefire ground floor investment opportunity that's about to blow up-- punt!

Absolutely agree that white collar crime gets the country club treatment.

The cry is that its non violent and should not be as bad.

I call BS on that.

The guy is scum, but the the people who invested with him were just dumb. They obviously didn't do a simple Google search to find out about his past. I know I am not the average reader of this particular writer since I knew who he was and knew he had previous law problems for his white collar crimes.
