That sounds about right. The Jones FO is literally clueless about how to augment their roster in FA. And IMO, all three- Elliott, Cooper and DLaw need to be released. But that won’t happen.

I think the votes have been cast and counted and the vast majority of both sides of the Dak debate agree that he's never going to deliver anything without an O-Line that's at least going to gain parity with opposition.
First FA/draft consideration is to improve that line for Dak and the run games sake.

I believe they screwed the pooch with that midseason shuffle on the OL. I don't like Collins at T, he is no longer athletic enough. They need to address the LT position, but they did pretty well early on with Smith out of the line up. I do think there needs to be more emphasis on the running game and the Cowboys need to rework that stable of players.

If the mantra will always be making the team better around the franchise QB, that's a problem. He should be making the team better.

A lot will depend on what version of Dak appears for the 2022 campaign. If he returns in fist half 2021 form, that will be a tremendous boost.

the problem is that both Dak and Moore (and by extension MM) were found out last year. They had wrinkles early on which led to success but when more experienced DCs adjusted they had no answer. Dak is an above average QB who cannot anticipate and throw receivers open and falls back on bad mechanics when under stress which leads to poor throws.

The other problem from my perspective is that this team with this coaching staff is undisciplined.

Add in that MM is a lame duck HC

Put these 3 things together and you have a recipe for bad things to happen. Even if we are going great at the half I won’t believe anything positive will happen unless we win a couple of playoff games. I fully expect that if we struggle MM will be fired and Jerry will put Quinn in place

If you think you can replace Gregory you are out of your mind. Especially if Lawrence is a cap casualty. High end talents at premium positions are very rare. RDE is second only to QB in terms of positional value.

Also need to keep Gallup, Wilson, or both if Cooper is a cap casualty.

If you aren’t keeping Schultz you better get another TE that can produce similarly. Dak desperately need a TE security blanket that is easy to spot over the middle

Under valued or not there appears to be decent TE's to be got in the middle rounds of the draft. We haven't the CAP to be over paying Schultz for a good contract year.

As I said the Dak 'argument' has to some degree been answered, he needs the weapons and support around him. Yea we overpaid but look on the bright side, if we went QB last year we wouldn't have Micah.
In any case LG would be the glaring weakness. As for Tyron, as Cavanaufh points out we can hardly afford (talent wise) to draft a LT that can't play Guard and sits waiting for a Tyron injury.....especially if we McGovern starting.

Most commentators disagree with you and suggest Jarwin/McKeon for a year with a drafted TE being a project TE3... Apparently, good value in TE in mid round of draft.

With approximately 8 Guards ranked in most draft boards and him being not even in the top 10 FA at the position im sure we could get Connor on minimum wage to play back-up. Possibly cut McGovern for a $2.5m saving, or let him concentrate on his RB duties.

Obs we need a LG in first couple of rounds.

I’m still very skeptical he comes anywhere close to a minimum deal, he ls good enough to start somewhere. If he costs $5-6MM per year it’s probably worth looking into though.

I’d rather go Oline round one, but this gives you flexibility to address other needs, we have plenty of them.

As we head into the off-season, 21 Cowboys will be Free Agents looking for new and better deals. According to NFL writer Sheil Kapedia, only 4 of them make his list of top 75 NFL FAs in 2022. (Can’t post a link because it’s paywall stuff)

I don’t completely agree with Kapedia’s assessments but it is interesting how he ranks the Cowboys he thinks will be pursued by many teams. (For the record, the article has DaVante Adams, packers WR as 1, chiefs LT Orland Brown, Jr at 2 and Bucs WR Cris Godwin at 3)

Here are the Cowboys picked among the top 75 FAs in 2022:

• At #25 is Dalton Schultz- I was a little surprised at this ranking but consider his comparative numbers- He ranks 7th among all TEs with 1,423 receiving yards over the past 2 seasons, and his 12 touchdowns the last 2 years are tied for 6th most. Schultz is only 26 and has never missed a game during the past 3 seasons. He’s not a great athlete like Travis Kelce but he’s solid. Worth it? Not sure.

• At #44 is Randy Gregory- RG had a good but not great year, so I don’t see him this high. He had 6 sacks and only played in 12 games this year due to a calf injury. He was a rotational player in 2020, and he was completely out of football in 2019. Is he worth big money when he’s only played more than 12 games just once in his whole career?

• At #45 is Michael Gallup- if not for the injuries this year Gallup was headed for a bigger payday. From 2019 to 2020, he had 1,950 yards which was 22nd among wide receivers, and his15.6 YPR average was 4th among players with at least 100 catches during that span. One thing I like about Gallup that Cooper doesn’t have as much is the ability to stretch the field. If Coop is released for cap reasons, keeping Gallup isn’t crazy.

• At #65- Jayron Kearse- he was only on a one-year, $1.13 million “prove it” deal last year, and he kinda did prove he has value. Kearse started 15 games and finished with 101 tackles, missing just 3.9% of his tackle attempts, which was the second-best mark among allNFL safeties. He was also very versatile playing at both S and some slot corner, and was even decent as an occasional blitz player. Will he be too expensive?

From what I’ve read, these FAs will be the most sought after and most expensive to keep. Any of these guys worth keeping at a higher price? What say you?

In my book, Gallup is intriguing because of his field stretching skills. IMO, Schultz will be too costly, Gregory is too undependable. Kearse? Maybe.

Gallup is dam good when he is healthy. He picked the wrong year to miss half the season. So, he could come cheap. He is certainly a much cheaper option than Amari Cooper who we cannot afford anymore.

Yes agree on O-line, however, looking at last year's FA JAG's and there's no evidence to say we're going to be able to free up comparative space... we only spent $9m over league minimum of 9/10 players, I doubt we'll have the money to sign anyone on a contract of $5m and if it is it'll be on a player that's expected to start a position of dire need (Guard/Tackle, WR, FS or LB).

You gotta find a way to keep Kearse....he's the glue that keeps everything together on defense. Getting Gallup back would be nice...but for how much? Don't trust Gregory....Schultz can be replaced in the draft....bunch of TEs in 2022.

I'd let all 4 test the market tbh. They may not be worth as much as some believe.

But I'd at least make Kearse a reasonable offer first. The versatility and dependability of the man is too high to completely ignore.

Kearse I keep if he's signed to a reasonable offer. From recent history in the overall safety market, the position doesn't get top pay priority so this is realistic.

Shultz will be too costly and we have found Jason Witten in the 3rd round and Shultz himself in the 4th. We need a TE that can catch and block to further aid in the Improvement of the run game anyways.

Gallup will be so far behind in his rehab he'll be like Hooker was for us last year where he'll start playing well end of season. He would have to be an affordable luxury.

Gregory is not worth big money for reasons already stated. I rather move to a 3-4 and get rid of DLaw also. If we don't and Gregory is going to give this apparent discount his agent apparently is suggesting then that's plan b. Otherwise move forward.
