Two positions - cornerback and backup quarterback -- particularly haunt the Cowboys just as they did in 2012.
Back then, the Cowboys made a series of aggressive moves that ultimately backfired and sent them back to square one, where they currently stand as they begin the talent acquisition process that will unfold over the next few months.
It's expected that the Cowboys will try to revive their sagging secondary that has underperformed since the club signed Brandon Carr to a $50.1 million contract and then moved up to draft Morris Claiborne with the sixth overall pick four years ago. Both players have failed to meetexpectations, struggling to adapt to a defensive system that wasinstituted a year after their arrivals. For a while, the Claiborne-Carr folly was viewed by outsiders as a self-inflicted problem for the Cowboys because of their decision to dump Rob Ryan's press-man scheme and switch to Monte Kiffin's zone-heavy system. But when Rod Marinelli replaced Kiffin and tailored the defense to match the strengths of Carr and Claiborne, the results didn't improve significantly.
