I'm watching the highlights from last week and they are showing the Favre "shovel pass"...

He obviously pitched it forward underhanded. When I was young, anything pitched forward underhanded was called as a forward lateral. Did they change the rule? Is is only with two hands that makes it a lateral?

Anything going forward is a pass no matter what they call it.
Good luck to your team today. Mind you, I'm not rooting for any team. Just wanted to say that.

only a forward lateral if it is beyond the line of scrimmage, if there has already been 1 forward pass on the play, or if in the kicking game, the ball is advanced from teammate A to teammate B where B is beyond the yardmarker that A is when A releases the ball.

You had me until you said "or..."

Basically the rule is this (and I don't need technical terms or a rule book to describe it):

There can only be one forward pass on a given play. That forward pass must be initiated from behind the line of scrimmage.

On Favre's play, there was only one forward and it was initiated from behind the line of scrimmage. As a result, it was a legal pass. It doesn't matter that he threw it underhanded, behind is back, no look, etc. It was a legal pass.

On plays that do not initiate from the line of scrimmage (i.e. kickoff) there can be no forward passes.

Thanks.

The Giants had key turnovers in their first meeting in Week 2 which is why the Packers blew open the game in the fourth quarter. If the Giants can avoid turnovers, this one should go down to the wire.
