While Jerry checks out every option he has available to replace either or both. Two sides to that coin.
Fact is that there will be more name quarterbacks hitting free agency that EVER BEFORE. If they so chose, they could try to sign Brady, Brees, or Rivers for a year or two, knowing full well that they'd be drafting their eventual replacements. And that would leave Dak trying to find someone else to pay him that huge money and going somewhere without a top offensive line and running back.
+1
And then Dak can also start thinking about how much having that star on his helmet is so much better than most any other logo, financially and socially. I think that's one of the disconnects. Dak wants a market rate on his contract, while Jerry *rightfully* wants Dak to calculate his compensation including the value the Jerry delivers to Dak's compensation that other owners don't.
It would be funny if instead of getting Payton as HC, we got Brees as QB.
Unfortunately, Jerry has shown no sign of considering a replacement to Dak beyond Mike White. Could have drafted another QB last year. Instead. Not.
In the Zeke negotiations, Jerry did nothing to give himself options. Pollard is better than expected, but it would have been crazy for Jerry to bank on that, and he's not really enough besides. We should have picked up a legitimate share the load interior back. Morris was just not it.
Could have also let Zeke look into trades with other teams. Let him really think about the costs of leaving, instead of just using his holdout as a cudgel over Jerry.
Jerry could have looked into what he could get in trade for Zeke too. Any legit gm not letting his personal relationships get into the calculations would have. Same for Dlaw.
I heard no such story for either. And so they were both overpaid here. Probably what happens with Dak. And Cooper.
Could be that instead of the old, proven guys, McCarthy sees young and cheap QBs that he thinks he can get more value out of. Maybe with letting Garrett go, Jerry will turn over a new leaf and stop being married to the guys we already have here. But I doubt it.
