Reports suggest Fox is looking to pay significantly more than the $450 million currents rights holders CBS and NBC are paying.

"How can we blow all this Disney cash"-people at FOX probably

Fox is looking to leverage this to increase its sports channel. Ratings indicate that they will lose money on the deal.

The strategic need for more bankable content also comes as Fox's parent group, 21st Century Fox, is looking to offload its movie and TV studio, cable TV assets including FX and National Geographic as well as its international business to Disney in a $52.4 billion deal subject to regulatory clearance.
Wow didn't see this coming.

Fox signs for $660m per year for 5 years a $210m increase on the previous deal.

All TV contracts for NFL lose money if based on the ratings. ABC was losing their shirt on MNF. When it switched to ESPN, Disney projected a profit from MNF. That's despite paying much more, getting crappy matchups instead of priority matchups, and having far fewer eyeballs to sell advertisers.

The difference is ESPN just jacked up their cost to 85 million households by $1/month because they now had MNF. Disney gained $1 billion in subscriber fees that almost entirely paid for the $1.1 billion annual cost. The new contract is now $1.9 billion a year. I'll give you one guess how they managed that (and it's not because ratings doubled ;) ).

Fox is in on Thursday nights... good to see the streaming will still be available
