Teams can designate one player a Franchise Player per year..... there are 3 variations

Exclusive FT- player cannot negotiate with anyone ..... calculated at Top contracts that year
Non-exclusive FT- player can negotiate with other teams..... calculated at Top 5 average over 5 years .... if traded the compensation is two 1st rounds picks when the team declines to match offer sheet.....DLaw got the Non-exclusive
Transition Tag- team can match any offer but there is no trade compensation...... avg of Top 10 contracts

Teams must designate a FT before the new League begins and they must have the cap space to do.... the cap space isn't released unless the player is traded or the FT is rescinded

The FT is fully guaranteed once signed but it can be rescinded before the player signs.... if it is rescinded the player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent and can sign any deal with any team

If a tagged player is set free and signs with a new team before May 7th they would qualify for a Comp Pick

Tagged players can negotiate and be traded once they sign the FT.... their rights cannot be traded without a deal or without signing...... compensation can be worked out but the League requires two 1sts if no agreement is reached

Teams and players have until July 15th at 4pm to reach a long-term deal..... if they don't the player must play under the one year FT...... if traded the player can only sign a one year deal with the new team

The player can refuse to sign and holdout without any fines since they aren't under contract... they must report by Week 10 to play that season and accrue a year's service

If they do sign the FT and sit out they will lose a game check for each week of the holdout and can be fined for missing Training Camp

Players do have to pass a physical when they sign and must "maintain excellent physical shape and condition" or be subject to forfeiture thru arbitration

If a player is FT a second time their tag will be 120% of their previous tag
If a player is FT a third time their tag will be 144% of their previous tag or the FT amount for QBs, whichever is higher

A player is considered FT once it is applied.....it does not have to be signed......FTs by previous teams count as well

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DLawrence was tagged as a DE for the second time at 20.5m.... it is the non-exclusive and he can be traded....... he has not signed and has hinted he will not play under the FT again..... they have until July 15th to reach a new deal or he can only play for the 20.5m

If he sits out he won't get paid but DAL would have to FT him for the third time in 2020..... that essentially assures he will be a FA since that number will be around 29.5m

He could report Week 10 and get paid the pro-rated amount for the rest of the season and playoffs.... if fails to report by then he will miss the entire season

Some think he can wait until TC ends or Sept and sign the FT and then get surgery for his torn Labrum... this would allow him to get paid and still miss most of the season..... this is a risky strategy and can be challenged by the team and would still mean he would have to come back at some point midway through the season

DLaw may be waiting for JClowney and FClark to sign and they may be waiting for him...... July 15th is the big deadline and that is when Dez signed at the last minute

I think that is exactly what is happening and what will happen July 15th. You may all now resume freaking out.

I still believe they will end up signing him but I would have franchised him with the designation that other teams can sign him if they give up 2 1st round picks. During the negotiations with other teams he may have been convinced that he is not worth as much as he thinks or if another team wanted to give up 2 1st rd picks that would have been fine too.

He was a non-exclusive tag. He can negotiate with other teams. Teams circumvent the 2 1sts rule by trading for him under the tag and re-signing him, as opposed to signing him outright.

I would have done it simply for the picks, even if a team wanted to negotiate it down to a 1st and 3rd.

He can talk to other teams but no one is calling

His leverage is not as strong as he thinks

If he isn't worth even a 1st round pick in trade then how is he worth KMack and ADonald money

He could wait till say June and sign tag then get surgery
I’ve never seen anything preventing that
He could be back late in the year but the avg nfl player didn’t play for 8.6 months after the surgery so if all went perfect it would likely be late November or early December by the time he recovers and is ready to play

I don't believe this is correct but I could be wrong. I think the tag we used prevents other teams from even talking to him without our permission.

Nope. The non-exclusive is almost exclusively used.

OK. Interesting. I wonder if any teams have contacted him and we just don't know about it.

A team could have told him they have no problem paying him Mack money but don't want to give up the picks.

Find a way to have them release you and you will get what you want.

I never seen anything saying it was non or not, I just assumed it was the exclusive tag. I assumed that because there has been nothing about him talking to any other team's. Even if they don't want to give up 2 1sts I figure a team would at least call to see what we would be willing to accept. And any news aniut the cowboys gets leaked.

Edit: if I'm reading it right, He has to sign it before he can negotiate with other team's ?

First off, what teams would be willing to pay him what he wants? Secondly, would they be willing to part with a 1st or even a 2nd on top of that? Just how many teams do we think would be interested in this? And there's the ? about that shoulder, will he be 100% by kickoff?

It's hard to use the Bears as an example with Mack because they are a D team, they are dependent on that more than any other team. If they had a 1st, they might be willing to go for Lawrence.

This will, most likely, come down to another stare down between the club and the player. I think Lawrence is banking on how they blinked with Bryant but that was not this. They'd just let their RB walk and were O dominant. The club has time and draft picks to cover this situation better.

But here's the question. Since he can play this injury card and get his money while doing nothing for the team, are they better off just not pulling the tag and letting him walk? Have to ask myself why Belichick didn't try and tag and trade Flowers and I think it's because he didn't want to have to pay him the tag price if he couldn't trade him but Flowers doesn't prize himself as the blue ribbon bull like Lawrence does. He would be easier to trade and doesn't have a bad wing.

And Nighty night, thanks for the info.

No...it is the non-exclusive tag and he is free to talk to anyone BEFORE he signs the tag

If he gets an official offer sheet then DAL and the new team will work out the trade if DAL doesn't want to match the offer

If they can't reach an agreement on a lesser trade and DAL doesn't match then the cost is two 1st round picks

In 2018 they gave him the non-exclusive franchise tag. For DEs that was: $17,143,000

For 2019 they have to give him 120% of the previous tag. That is: $20,571,600.00

With either type of tag, the team can trade the player if the player agrees to a contract with the other team.

With the non-exclusive tag they have the option to match any offers. If the team declines to match offers to a non-exclusive tagged player, then they receive two 1st round picks.

Good to know. By allowing him to talk to other teams there could be some scheming involved.

This is what I keep saying. What team is going to pay Tank what he wants? If we're at an impasse with what he's asking, what other team will add a 1st and a 3rd to do it?

Antwaun Woods had the same surgery on Jan 16th and hopes to be ready for OTAs in a few weeks

DLaw should have had the surgery the same day

If he tries to game the system the team will fight it...... 20m in cap space is not a trivial matter

I think that is exactly what is happening and what will happen July 15th. You may all now resume freaking out.

I think the Cowboys are also waiting to see how much cap space they have left after they get everything settled with Quinn and any other holes they want to fill.
