From the sound of it, Frederick made sure to get a deal done before the game because he didn't want to have to worry about injury going into the season. This is a very Cowboys friendly deal. He barely got more than Mack who went to Atlanta; and he is signed on for 6 years of his prime. In 2-3 years teams will be giving 10-11 million to the top centers. With Tyron Smith and Frederick signed to team friendly deals, Cowboys are set up to afford Martin and Collins in the future.

I know. But he's the next lineman to sign long term.

Doubt it.

I see La'el getting done first. That may simply be a 2 or 3 year deal but the value will likely be set to pay him what he'd be getting in those years had he not dropped out of the draft. So like mid-first round money.

That one's just about doing right by the kid.

Wonder what the details are?

The extension was announced as 6 years, but it doesn't kick in until after the 2017 season, which was the final year of Travis Frederick's rookie deal after the fifth year option was exercised this Spring.

So Fred will be under contract for 7 years following this season.

That means the team will have the option of restructuring the contract, if desired, in 2017-18 in order to create more salary cap room.

A league source told ESPN's Adam Caplan that the deal, which kicks in beginning in 2018, is for six years and $56.4 million, with $28.2 million guaranteed.

We need to see the kid do right by the quarterback a bit more first.

just spent the last 30 minutes reading and watching the reaction to Travis frederick being drafted.

It proved to me something that is true of the internet and the national sports media. The fans who hate Jerry/garrett hated the drafting of frederick and said he couldn't play, called him a fat pud who is a terrible athlete and said Jerry drafted him on his own. Secondly, there is no such thing as a draft expert. Never has been never will be. Its just noise.

Ed werder said he was told by multiple teams frederick was a 4th 5th or 6/7 th round draft pick. Funny stuff intended to feed the noise. Mayock was shocked because he had him as a third rounder. etc etc.

btw Did elam or floyd get extensions yet?

Funny stuff.

The same people that Morris Claiborne was the best CB drafted since Deion

It's absolutely not an exact science by any means but some teams seem to be better than others

The last time we did this was with Jay Ratliff, extending 5-6 years with 2 years left....no matter how it turned out it was smart then and is smart now......they can write off 40% of the signing bonus before the extension even kicks in and they are guaranteeing 10m in salaries they were going to pay anyways(2016-2017 salaries)

Obviously, very few people would deny that extending Frederick is a good thing; however, the cap implications may ultimately turn out to be good, or bad. It looks like Fred's cap hit is the same this year with the extension as it would have been without it.

Next year he appears to have the biggest cap hit on his entire contract. Obviously this is probably a planned restructure, but if they somehow ride out the year without restructuring it he would have a bargain cap number for the remainder of his contract, assuming he continues to play at his current All Pro level.

All in all, extending him was a good thing for the team and a good deal for the player. I would not want him to test free agency, or his contract numbers would likely have been somewhat higher. The extension was good for the team, and the financial security it provides him is good for him as well.

It would be nice to see us offset some of the money we just locked up in him by some young guys stepping up and saving us some cap room by bumping off a marginally performing player with a higher cap number.

He will be a salary cap ATM just like TSmith.......without seeing the numbers, we will see several planned restructures to create space....
