While I am certain we will sign a defender or two...it seems like we are starting a trend with our recent signings.
Prior to the 2017 draft, our offense had a sizable amount of young talent for this team to build around that will be eating up the bulk of our salary cap for the next several years. Prior to the 2017 draft, our defense had zero players that were projected to receive a second contract so obviously, the defensive side is going to be taking home a lot less of the salary cap pie.
What does a smart front office do to offset that disrepency?
Let quality offensive players go and sign defensive players?
Sign defensive player to massive contracts without worry about salary cap problems?
Set yourself up to almost exclusive draft defense for two years to add as many quality, blue chip players as possible to balance out the talent on the roster?
Obviously this team has decided the last option is the best option and I agree. We are setting ourselves up for our second straight draft of drafting primarily defensive players which is obviously a more cost effective strategy to add more talent to our defense. If we can add 2-4 quality starters on defense—suddenly our defense can become a strength on this team...not just for the short term but long term as well.
These last two days have peaked my excitement for the draft.
