Free Agency Predictions

Free agency is scary close so besides our own players, anyone have any predictions?

I believe at least 2 out of the following 3 players are going to joint our team.

I believe the best way to predict future teams for free agents besides analyzing needs is to look at links between the player and the coaching staff. Derek Dooley is our wide receiver coach and there were some reports that we were eye balling Cordarelle Patterson in the 2013 draft because of the Dooley connection(Patterson's college coach) before the Vikings traded up to get him. In retrospect, it's great that we didn't draft him considering who we got in his place but Patterson would immediately fill a need at receiver and he would give us the return threat so many of us crave. He is definitely a risky WR2 so I still suspect we draft someone fairly high but if he has any chance to progress in that department, it would be with Dooley.

Teams also like to take players from within the division if possible due to the identical competition they would face. We snatched up Cedric Thornton last season to mixed results, I could see us making a push for Bennie Logan as well. They were high on him during the draft and he may be had at a lesser price considering the amount of quality interior linemen in the market.

Lastly, I will make an easy prediction in Demarcus Ware. I believe this one is a given if he leaves Denver. He gets to do what so many veterans feel they are destined to do, finish off their career where it started and be part of the reason the team that drafted them finally gets a ring. His offseason home is still here, he has worked with Garrett for a large portion of his career and his buddy Witten is still here.

This isn't necessarily the route I believe they should go...this is just my prediction of a few midrange free agents they make a run for that are not already on the roster.

It should be an interesting week!

If someone could guarantee that DeMarcus Ware would last through the playoffs, I'd sign up for that negotiated deal...here and now.
I would love Ware back. He still has juice coming off the edge.

Give me one of the old edge rushers for cheap (Ware, Freeney, Peppers).... and limit his snaps to obvious pass rushing situations.

i don't think we're going to do much at all. probably end up bringing back most of our players, and fill out the rest of the roster with a bunch of underachieving free agents who were drafted high by other teams

If they sign any FA of note, it will be a WR. The rest will be re-signing most of their own guys and lower level types. Sets up for a defense heavy draft.

most of there free agents that are worth any thing will be signed by other teams as much money as there is and the weak class of FA

Go with what Jerry said - WR, CB and Moore.
WR - Twill or someone at least as good. Not Butler
CB - Carr or someone better. Mo is not reliable enough.
Moore for backup QB.
Irving resigned.

Draft - trade up for DE. Other picks: CB, SS, WR, DT

I know we can free up a lot of cap if needed, but I'm worried about retaining some of our own. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up retaining only 1 of Carr, Church, Claiborne, and Wilcox. We need to retain atleast 2 to not create big holes.

We're not likely to see a lot of new acquistions, but there seems to be a good probability of Ware returning. Obviously not a long term solution, but may buy the Cowboys a year if there isn't value at de in the 1st round.

If you are looking for an interior DL to help the pass rush, Logan is not that guy.

If you want a run plugger, then maybe.

We have some decent interior rushers, Logan could free them up and plus he's one of the best run stuffers in the league. He would be a welcomed addition in my opinion.

I know we were very good at stopping the run this season on paper but I have a feeling teams could've ran on us fairly easily if they stuck to it.

I actually really like this post.
I think you could end up very correct but even if you are not this is very solid logic.

Patterson: He'd be a Returner at the very least and the WR2. Dooley knows him and he could have a role here similar to what he did in Minny.
He had the same 70 targets last year as TWill.
He's also only 25. That's a key piece because you can give him a 4 year deal and he won't be signed to age 30 still.
Not a ton of market value probably so things like comfort with Dooley could sway him towards us if money is similar 3m-4m a year type stuff.
WR2 in Dallas is really WR3. Beasley will get more targets in this offense. So being 220 and able to block matters.
And for those asking for speed this fits.

Ware: Ware has kids here and he is one of the bigger family guys the Cowboys have had. His kids are getting older and flying them all over probably not ideal.
If he's gotta take a low money, make good type deal I think l he'd do it here.
And we have DL, we just need 20-25 snaps a game as a pure pass rusher.
Makes a lot of sense for both sides even if we get a guy at 28.
And for all the whiners about his back, Charles Haley had a worse back through most of his Cowboys career.

Logan: Def the kind of guy Dallas could grab to replace McClain who may have priced himself out of our range with his healthy play last year.
Issue is price. But if we cna get him for the same deal we got Cedric Thornton on, I bet he's a strong consideration.
Dallas needs run stop guys on the interior if they lose McClain.
Team mostly plays nickel and with speed linebackers.

These are all low end deals that make sense from positional/ team needs and team connections in past.
Dallas liked Logan a lot and tried to get up to draft him.
Dooley and Patterson have the UT tie.
Ware was wearing the star this past weekend as his son played flag football for "the Cowboys".

It is going to be really interesting when we have done nothing in terms of signing new players after a week.

There will be a lot of confusion with the inactivity. Probably a little bit of anger.

Even though that is clearly not the intelligent response.

We did seem to get gashed often, even if it doesnt show up innthe stat column.

We were very high on Logan in 2013

With the obligatory "Player X Signs With Team X" thread titles, with the OP consisting of " Why didnt we even schedule a visit "

I like this list, Ware does seem like the right fit for the DE to add. But I think they pursue a WR of a higher caliber than Patterson - though I like the idea of him and of adding his return ability.
