Are there any realistic options that are going to be available?

there are plenty......but everyone might say they are not scheme fits for marinellis defense lol. i like damon harrison because of his run plugging but once again, is he a scheme fit?

I would focus on safety, CB and LB; DTs can be had in the draft and several can push Golden Cock to the bench.

Some might disagree burt losing Justin Durant made a huge impact in 2015. Dallas needs to find guys like Durant in FA who can be solid contributors but do not command top salary.

Kendall Reyes
Akiem Hicks
Ahtyba Rubin (played well in a similar scheme in Seattle as a run-stuffer)
Ian Williams
Jaye Howard
Cedric Thornton
Haloti Ngata
Terrance Knighton
Damon Harrison

That's not in order, some good names there who shouldn't be too expensive. Muhammad Wilkerson is a pipe dream, Malik Jackson probably as well although both of them are obviously the most talented DT's on the market. Damon Harrison would be great but I can't see us signing a guy who is 340-350, same goes for Harrison and Knighton.

Our best bets are probably Rubin due to playing in Seattle and Reyes/Howard due to their ability to penetrate. Hicks would be a solid signing too, great size at 6-5, 320+ and has been relatively productive with 9.5 sacks over the last 3 years.

We need to re-sign Jack Crawford too, shouldn't be expensive but he brings versatility and some interior pass rush.

Recent history tells us the golden cock is untouchable

The Patriots are expected to make a strong strong push to keep Hicks.

It would be nice to be a little more active in free agency, but this is such a deep and good DT crop in the draft, it might be more prudent to spend the cash elsewhere.

I agree, I would love to see Dallas try to make a move to get Josh Norman with Carolina. Granted he may never reach FA but if he is I think it would be a very good move to get him

Yea, there will be some excellent options for us at the top of the 2nd. Just pointing out that there are some good options available in free agency as well, but the same goes for RB, LB, S, and CB to a lesser extent. It's just a matter of how our genius brain trust decides to attack our positions of need with regard to the draft vs. free agency.

I'm guessing we have maybe one or two decent signings, a bunch of schlubs and then a CB and TE at some point in the first 4 rounds.

No way I am getting into Carr-type money for a CB again, No sir, no way.

Great idea, maybe after that we can sign Eric Berry and swing a trade for Aaron Donald. We'd be ready to rock!!

I think having a CB who can play man and zone coverage would be a big boost. I would cut Carr and Cowboys will have cap space to make such a move. Again Carolina may not even let him hit the market and as far as Berry and Donald I have not said anything about them. If Norman does not make it to FA and a guy like Berry is there sure I would look to take him.

Norman and Berry will probably never hit the market and even if they did, they would be so cost prohibitive, it would be funny.

Free agency is getting to be less and less of an impact exercise anymore. Elite level players like Norman or Berry are staying put.

There are so pretty decent players that I would not mind, don't get me wrong that could help this team enter the draft clean (Travis Benjamin, Olivier Vernon, Andre Branch, Demario Davis, Sean Spence, Eric Weddle, Casey Heyward, Brandon Boykin)

But the days of blockbuster FAs are probably over with.

Nick Hayden is a FA.

I like the write up on Hayden last year:

Cowboys re-signed DT Nick Hayden.
Hayden started all 16 games last season, but was among the league's least-effective defensive tackles. He graded out dead last in Pro Football Focus' ratings, getting whipped by the run while generating zero pass rush. Hayden's spot on the 53-man roster won't be assured. Thu, Mar 19, 2015 07:43:00 PM

Yet we re-signed him and he was a starter, again. Hopefully we won't go with another terrible DT for 16.

Wouldn't surprise me to see another low risk signing for competition for the 1 tech.

Wilkerson is way better

Also coming off a broken leg in the final week of the season that requires approximately six months to heal.

I like Damon Harrison as a space eater but he is probably not enough of a "rushman". Besides he already has a nickname, "Big Snacks" and I do not know if Marinelli would be offended he could not get his own on him.
