Late bloomer or career year in his last shot at getting a decent contract? Not going to pretend to know because I'm not sure I've ever actually seen the guy play (much like everyone campaigning for him), but it's definitely a legit question. The scouting department would have to do their homework on him
I'd actually resign Carr and Claiborne, then take a CB in Round 2 since there's a good chance it will be BPA anyway. I think you can get both of them cheap, and Mo will probably agree to another 1 yr deal. Carr/Claiborne/Scandrick/Brown/Draft pick, when Mo gets injured Brown/Draft pick will battle it out for that position. Gives us a little breathing room to transition, especially if we get a productive pass rusher like Addison. I mean, you can get Carr and Mo for probably under 7 mill combined, especially if Carr will lower his salary for a larger signing bonus (if he plays along, like if we just decide to let him go next year with no guaranteed). Carr isn't the most talented guy, but he's a gamer and a pro and active in the community. He's worth keeping around to knock around the young bucks until we actually have a replacement. I mean why not
I do think it's funny when people say stuff like, "i'd rather save the money" etc.
My question is, why? If it literally won't stop you from signing any of your young guys like Martin, Collins, Lawrence (iffy one), then why wouldn't you bring in a guy who might be a little overpaid but will help you at your biggest need? Are they Jerry's accountants?
I want the team to improve, and as long as it doesn't jeopardize signing our homegrown talent, I'm all for bringing in every guy that can play.
Addison played 433 snaps. On 294 pass rushing snaps he had 9.5 sacks, 5 hits, and 51 total qb pressures. Had his best season in run defense. I don't really care about PFF grading but 2nd in pass rushing productivity last year for 4-3 DE. Numbers are pretty good though.
It's not abnormal for a guy to hit a groove a little later in his career, it'll actually keep his price down. Will he get overpaid? Yeah, probably. But it's going to be more like Ayers than Vernon.
But he's exactly the type of guy that we can use in this "rotation" in our scheme. He's a good player.
Give me DT in FA like Logan/Poe
Draft Harris at 28
And that's still little to no snaps for Tapper, 1 of Crawford/Irving, and the high rookie draft pick...
But we'll just agree to disagree here since we're just going in circles. I want to actually build the D line. You want to keep throwing bodies at it hoping something sticks in my opinion. I'd much rather see Irving, a 1st/2nd round pick, and Tapper get as many snaps as possible to develop and grow then see a an overpaid marginal vet FA demand starter snaps every week.

When people say sign Logan, are they expecting a pocket collapsing, pass rushing DT? Because that's not Logan. And note, he had Cox playing next to him who ate up a lot of the double teams. And Logan still was just basically a solid run stuffing DT.
Good well thought out post. The way I look at the DL, I want good players knowing they have to fight to get snaps and practicing their rear ends off.
Barring injuries, which will obviously come into play and make certain decisions each week, Charles Tapper and the rookie DE would be competing to get a jersey and dress for each game.
I view it as a positive, the other DEs are competing for their snaps, too.
Which is fine, we're just sharing our thoughts here.
So do I.
I want options.
It probably won't happen, but I'd love to go 10 deep on the DL. If that happens, at least two of them are sitting each week.
If there isn't a known player acquired at DE, we'd be giving the snaps to completely unproven players in Charles Tapper and the rookie draft pick who haven't played a snap at this level of football.
Most rookie pass rushers don't hit the ground running in the NFL. It can happen, but it shouldn't be expected.
I just want to do something to cover the position before the draft.
If Tapper and/or the rookie DE consistently show up in practice, they will get playing time next season.
David Irving had the fourth highest snap count on the DL last season at 46.3%, he was higher than Terrell McClain (44.6%), Benson Mayowa (36.2%), DeMarcus Lawrence (31.1%) and Cedric Thornton (26.3%).
Rookie Maliek Collins (62.1%) led the way, followed by Tyrone Crawford (59.3%) and Jack Crawford (50%).
Jack is a good depth player, but he should not ever be playing half the snaps.
Jack, McClain and Ryan Davis (14.7%) are free agents, so there are plenty of snaps up for grabs.
Not very promising. Nice work on your part. Thanks. Draft...Draft and Draft some more.Lorenzo Alexander - Age 33, only 9 total sacks in all previous years. 6-1, 245.
Nick Perry - Solid player, good size 6-3, 265.
Erik Walden - Size ?, 6-2, 250
Chandler Jones - Probably franchised.
Mario Addison - Age 29. Pass Rush specialist. Only 4 career starts. 6-3, 260.
Calais Campbell - A 3-4 DE in AZ.
Melvin Ingram - Size ?, 6-2, 247.
Julius Peppers - Old.
Jason Pierre-Paul - NY would do everything possible to prevent him from going to the Cowboys.
Andre Branch - Dissappointing career, but maybe a late bloomer.
Jabaal Sheard - Only 8 starts in 2016. Averaged 5 starts in past 3 years.
Chris Baker - A 3-4 DE, 6-2, 320.
Devin Taylor - SDE type. 6-7, 275.
Robert Mathis - Old.
James Harrison - Old.
Charles Johnson - Probably SDE, 6-2, 275.
Chris Long - Age 31. 6-3, 270.
William Gholston - SDE type. 6-6, 281.
John Simon - A 3-4 OLB, 6-1, 260.
DeMarcus Ware - Old.
Damontre Moore - Flashed some ability in 2rd year, but character issues derailed him in NY.
Datone Jones - Played both OLB and DE in 3-4 defense, but primarily DE. 6-4, 285.
Courtney Upshaw - Only 6 career sacks. 62, 272.
Barkevious Mingo - College pass rusher but played 4-3 OLB with Patriots. 6-4, 240.
I think that Logan, Collins and Crawford can make a really nice rotation inside stop the run and press the pocket
Yes on Nick Perry.
If Addison is a pass rush specialist, then Mayowa would have to be the starter. He's not the ideal guy to be a run down type player.
I guess they could keep DLaw as the starter at RDE with Addison as the pass rush specialist DLaw could move to LDE on some snaps when Addison is in the game. That would leave Mayowa without a spot.
I'm not sure that Sheard is much of an upgrade.
Datone Jones and Devin Taylor would be another LDEs, but they need a RDE.
Melvin Ingram might be possible but his size is borderline.
Then prepared to be disappointed if you think Logan will press the pocket.
Yep, I don't see Logan as being some sort of pocket-pushing force.
If you are looking for a run plugger 1-tech, he's a fine choice. But if you are looking to spend FA money on a DT to pressure the QB, Logan isn't that.
He played alongside Cox who was often doubled and rarely collapsed the pocket.
What aisle at Wal-mart are those guys stocked?
- Let's add a 10-12 sack guy and a 9-10 sack guy and do double damage. Let's spend about 20 million on those two players please.
Ok let me put this way....lets get our team total sacks up from 36 to about 42You're using wrong criteria... Not that wanting a guy to have 10-12 sacks is the wrong thing.
The challenge is this defense isn't going to give guys 900 snaps in order to accumulate that number of sacks.
Collins led the defensive line in snaps at 656.
What the Cowboys are looking for is 5 or 6 guys getting between 5 & 8 sacks... Which is "Seattle-like".
Mayowa had 6 sacks in only 381 snaps, which is a very good ratio.
You gotta goto Whole Foods for those guys, you won't find them at WalmartWhat aisle at Wal-mart are those guys stocked?
Making a food run and don't want to forget to pick up the 19-22 sacks laying around.
