137th Overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Buster Skrine is one of my former pet cats who hails from my dad's alma mater, Tennessee-Chattanooga. I wanted him pretty bad, especially because my dad was a standout CB for the Mocs in the late 70s/early 80s.

Well, looks like with Joe Haden and Justin Gilbert, the Browns can't afford to keep him. He's a sure tackler and a scrappy player. Very similar to Orlando Scandrick, and he's not afraid to try to hit a guy bigger than him. He has 6 career INTs in a few years.

Some rapport with defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, who drafted him for the Browns. I think there is a shot we could bring him in.

4 years, $24M. That is half of what Brandon Carr got. It also gives us proven talent and depth at the CB position and essentially washes out Morris Claiborne AND the need to draft another CB high in this draft, allowing us to focus more intently on the defensive front both this year and next year.

A starting 5 rotation of Scandrick, Carr, Skrine, Claiborne, and Moore/Patmon? Not too shabby if we can continue to fix our DT/DE situation.

For the record, if Skrine was in fact able to sign here, I would waive Claiborne in favor of keeping Tyler Patmon on the 53 and Sterling Moore, due to his age and experience.

What are your thoughts, CowboysZone?

Yes, I've mentioned him before. I was watching a Cleveland game for some reason and noticed him. He smallish, but fast.

The 6M per year is at the very top of what I had in mind for him.

They will not cut Claiborne. His salary is guaranteed. He will probably go on the PUP to start the season.

I know they won't. That was simply personal preference, and I don't care if his salary is fully guaranteed...he's a mentally weak player who has the potential to harm the chemistry of this young team than help it.

But, you're right. He will be on the roster this year because of the financials.

Cowboys need a big corner to go along with the smaller Oscan and Patmon. League is all about matchups and the team needs someone who can shut down the bigger receivers.
Skrine is a nice player and always around the ball, but I don't like him for this team.

"Big Corner" is such an anomaly. Richard Sherman is a generational size/talent combination. We went 12-4 without a "big corner." People need to stop trying to find the next Richard Sherman, which again, is an anomaly.

Would love to get him, I get a lot of Browns games and he looked really good last year especially against the colts.

Skrine is streaky or maybe because of haden he just seemed to give up a lot of plays. He was penalized a lot last year and has a total of 30 for 390 over his career

Didnt Dez absolutely abuse him?

The Cowboys last played Cleveland in 2012, week 11. I did a search on the coaches film of all passed to Dez in that game. Dez did have a good game with 145 yards, but not much of it was against Skrine. Skrine did have an illegal contract penalty while defending Dez on an intermediate sideline route, but otherwise he just gave up a few short passes. Skrine did a good good defending a couple of intermediate to deep contested type passes.

Cornerback is one of the two dominant defensive positions needing upgrade for our Cowboys. If he could be acquired along with a lowered price tag for Carr, I would give Claiborne his year three.

I talked to my Browns die hard fan coworker about him today (yes, he's a fan of all the Cleveland sports teams and aside from L. James coming back it's been torture). He said he is really fast, small, and gets called for a lot of penalties. It sounds like he may be a lesser Scandrick. I'm not sure if that helps round out what Dallas wants to do in the secondary or just gives them more depth. The small size and propensity to give up penalties is likely what holds his price down a little.

Teams like the Jets and Eagles have a lot of cap space and big needs at CB. Dallas will likely be picking over the carcasses of whatever is left.

Not saying Richard Sherman, but if you recall the reason the team had trouble stopping Green Bay was a big receiver Adams who was matched up with 5' 10 Sterling Moore. If you choose to ignore that do it at your own peril. New England would have lost the Super Bowl had they not went out and picked up Brandon Browner who shut down that tall dude killing them in the first half, a guy no one ever heard of. Once Browner matched up with him second half he went away.

Myself, I won't be passing on a good cornerback whether via free agency or the draft.
