Good, now I'm hoping he can improve his game back to where it was when he first began in the league. This team has asked a lot of him, moving him around, and I'm glad to see him get a chance. Even more glad to see him take the cut.

This is our best bet for having a swing tackle and not adding more dead money to the cap. Happy it got done. Hopefully this was a wake-up call for Free.

If we can get him to play the way he was late in last season, then it is a decent deal. Really we could bring in Winston but that's pretty much same guy, different jersey. Maybe a little more money than he should be getting but there is a value to the continuity we'll have with him returning

Of course, if he sucks in pre-season we can still cut him

What are our cap savings this year and next due to the salary reduction?

3.5 mil savings with this pay cut.
Could have saved about 7m with a cut but eaten that 7m next year in dead money when we have no real leeway.

If we release him june 2nd 2014 we pay 3m in dead money but gain 5m in cap savings.

Eat 4m in dead money in 2015.

I agree. I would also say this team is not deep enough on the OL to just unload Free especially after taking a pay cut. He has shown he can play some quality ball and did so when he took over for Colombo.

The year after that he was very very good at LT.... but that is how we got in this mess.

Presumably they would have some of that 7M left over to roll onto next year.

If they only use 5M of that 7M and roll over 2M, they're basically taking 5M in hits for this year and next.

Some are looking at this as "well, better than 8 mill"

I'm still looking at it as "we are paying a crappy player more than 3 mill." This bum needs his walking players. Virtually any vet RT can come in for that price and be a better player.

Todd Archer ‏@toddarcher 49s Its a new 2-year deal for Doug Free. Working on new numbers but was supposed to make $15m in 13-14. Will be much less than that

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 1m
Cowboys RT Doug Free has agreed to take a pay cut, source said confirming @calvinwatkins report. How much? $3.5M. So, he stays

Nick Eatman ‏@nickeatman 1m Nothing has been signed or turned into the league, but sounds like Doug Free has agreed to terms on a 2-year deal that lowers his cap charge

Dan Graziano ‏@espn_nfceast 6m
RT @calvinwatkins: Filed to ESPNDallas. Doug Free agreed to paycut and Anthony Hargrove is going to sign with Cowboys.

Ed Werder ‏@Edwerderespn 3m Cowboys OT Doug Free has accepted 50% pay cut to remain with team. Was highest paid RT at $7M. Can't earn original salary through incentives

You guys don't think they are considering that split-time with Parnell as a long term option for the season, do you?

Exactly.

Does this mean when he gets bull rushed straight into Romo's lap that I should feel better b/c at least he did it for half the cost? :laugh2:

I can't believe people are defending this bum. What happened to the high standards of this organization?

edit: 2 year deal??? wow this can't be LIFE!

Could this help the prospects for long term contracts with Sean Lee or Dez maybe?

From a salary cap perspective, this makes the most sense for the Cowboys. I'm guessing he'll be the swing tackle this year and will be a June 1 cut next season.

So all of our eggs are in the "Parnell takes a big step up" basket... Along with Livings and Bernardeaux and the rookie center. Quite a risk but I guess we can hope...

There's barely any real difference, just more cap money overall by keeping him.

He should have beent cut.

Not really. Long term deals are often very cap friendly up front

FYI: It is not a "new" 2 year deal. It's the same deal restructured. They don't want it to be a new deal because they have prorated bonus money still allotted for next year that needs to stay in that year.

This speaks volumes to the salary cap and not the quality of play. I know the salary cap is better for the players and makes the league as a whole more competitive (ie watered down), but moves like this make me miss the old days of players who were no good got cut.
