What's funny is just yesterday JJ said the complete opposite. WHO'S PLAYING WITH WHO? Someone either told JJ to shut up or something had to happen....I posted the quote yesterday where he said FREE WILL NOT PLAY GUARD!!! FUNNY CRAP

I think JG told him dude shut up or JJ didn't meet with the coaches and scouts before spouting off at the hip or he was drunk

I'm pretty surprised by the move if it's permanent. Not because I don't think he can play there, but because I don't trust Parnell and I don't see ANY back up tackles on the team. If Parnell is now our starting RT, them who is the swing?

On the lighter side, it shores up our Guard spot. I think Bern was capable, but has proven that he gets dinged way to easily. Apparently he missed practice today for one reason or another. So if we can't trust Bern to play every week, then we need another starter. With Livings all but gone, I guess Free is the guy.

What if they are making this statement as part of a posturing move to bring down the asking price of a vet guard after week one?

I think the whole "We're looking for a potential starting guard" thing is off the table. Leary and Free are your starters. Bern is the #1 backup.

I can see that. If nothing else, we're publicly moving on to our Plan B.

I do think it's likely that they're looking at imminent free agents and either like our own OT depth, or expect the OT FA market to be deeper than the OG market, and so they're going forward getting their best combination of 5 on the field and backfilling those 6,7,8 positions what whatever we've got and whatever they can find.

Yeah, we're just creating another hole with this move. Not as drastic as a hole in the starting line up, but dangerously close, and possibly harder to fill.

Really, if the staff thinks Parnell should start over Free, so be it. Parnell starts week one with Free as the swing.

But starting Free at guard week one when there are clearly better guard options out there reeks of extreme hubris.

It's a heck of a lot easier to find a capable OG than what it is to find a capable OT.

EDIT: I agree with your theory and posted so in another thread.

You are forgetting a huge part of the problem. He was having a hard time with BC scheme and was not either understanding the technique or didnt buy into it until towards the end of the season.

I like putting our best players in the middle of the line.

That starts to be the makings of a good forward wall if you ask me.

I thought one of Free's biggest problems was his strength. Isn't that only going to be amplified against interior DT and NTs?

I suspect this "permanent" moving of Free to guard may change drastically if he encounters problems early-on whenever he's used there next. It may be against the Texans or it may be vs. the Giants in the opener. But whatever happens regarding his performance at guard, it's gotta be susceptible to change. Handling it any other way would be absolutely ludicrous.

I predict that we have seen the last of Costa and that Bernie has become the primary interior backup at Guard and Center. This will also lead to the end of the Arkin project. Killer has demonstrated enough in live action that should warrant a spot as the 2nd interior lineman that can play guard and center in a pinch. Here are my spots on the OL for the final roster: Smith, Leary, Fred, Free, Parnell, Bernie, Killer, Bell and Street FA after final cuts.

I think height is my main concern with Free, but Kyle Long is also just over 6'6". Should be interesting, gotta say I didn't think the team had the testicular fortitude to try something so out of the box. I kinda like it.

My main concern is not Free, however. It's Parnell.

DuuuuuuuuuuuuDE...........please don't ever compare Free to Long again. Long is really put together: especially his hips, legs and middle core: just a specimen. Free? Not so much. This smacks of desperation and won't work long term: they should've drafted another olineman in the 2nd or 3rd round: didn't necessarily need Escobar or Williams

...........I agree with this too: not only is Free not a guard but Parnell is VERY suspect at R.tackle.......it isn't like JJ is cheap, he's just clueless and stubborn as HELL. The obvious move was to keep Free at R.Tackle and sign the best guard or TWO guards possible. This won't end well...

Obviously I'm going to reference Waters, but Geoff Hangartner's another Texas boy with some solid starting experience that might be worth a look. Same with Peterman.

Look, I don't love the Cowboys trying to pinch pennies on the OL, but I do get the philosophy. There's also a point where you have to read the writing on the wall and react accordingly.

We struck out with Bern, Livings, and Arkin, we've got a hole at OG, and there are serviceable players in FA available to fill that hole. Now isn't the time to stubborn about this; just sign a solid guard, keep Free at OT, and let's get on with it.

Hahaha, "put together."

Kyle Long
Combine Invite:
Yes
Height: 6061
Weight: 313
40 Yrd Dash: 4.91
20 Yrd Dash: 2.86
10 Yrd Dash: 1.70
Vertical Jump: 28
Broad Jump: 08'11"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.63
3-Cone Drill: 7.83

Doug Free
Combine Invite:
Yes
Height: 6062
Weight: 324
40 Yrd Dash: 5.19
20 Yrd Dash: 2.96
10 Yrd Dash: 1.78
Vertical Jump: 30
Broad Jump: 09'03"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.53
3-Cone Drill: 7.38
Height - 6062, Weight - 324

So, despite being heavier, Free had a better shuttle, three cone, broad jump, and vertical jump. But yes, please keep staring at Long's "hips."

I read it again and laughed harder. DON'T compare a stud, butt kicking young Guard like Long to a washed up, soft clown like Free.....it's assinine

Great to see that our 1st week opponent has worse problems then we have Zoners:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Tom Coughlin is trying out another new offensive line.

nyg.gif
On Monday, the Giants trotted out Kevin Boothe at center in place of Jim Cordle. James Brewer moved to left guard and rookie Justin Pugh remained at right tackle. Chris Snee remains at right guard and Will Beatty remains at left tackle.

The Giants started Cordle at center and Pugh at right tackle to replace the injured David Baas (knee) and David Diehl (thumb) against the Jets on Saturday. There were some communication issues, and Eli Manning was under pressure at times facing an aggressive Jets defense.

Coughlin wouldn't say if this is definitely the starting O-line moving forward until Baas and Diehl are ready to return. "We’ll possibly do some of that," Coughlin said. "We’ll try different combinations. Nothing wrong with that, I hope."

TC on KP: The Giants have lost safety Stevie Brown for the season to a torn ACL. The Eagles released former Giants safety Kenny Phillips on the same day the Giants learned the extent of Brown's injury. So, could the Giants be interested in a reunion?

"I’m not aware of that," Coughlin said. "Although I do know our staff will look at every player."

Practice 411: This was a scout team practice, which means the Giants were preparing a lot for the preseason finale against the Patriots on Thursday. Coughlin said he is not sure yet how much the starters will play, but he did say he is likely going to play his starters some.

"Well, I’m strongly inclined to do that," he said. "It’s just (a question of) how much, that’s all."

During practice, Dan Connor remained with the first team at middle linebacker. Jason Pierre-Paul did work with the second team during individual drills in his first practice since coming off the PUP list.
