I guess you just aren't going to understand. You can say you wont get a virus w/ the free-ware product and I flat out am saying you are FOS.

The paid product gives you much better coverage against trojans/viruses/malware than the freebie client does. I can't help if you can't understand that.

It boils down to how much time you will spend once you do get infected than say the person who has paid for the pro version. That isn't saying the pro version users will never get infected. They can and do, but cleaning if off takes much less time for them than it would be for those w/o the other services running in the pro version.

If you get a nasty infection. Your free client will not get rid of all of it if it's writing itself to the registry, memory, or other sectors on your HD.

The 40$ to me is a pitance to pay considering I feel my time is worth much more.

Consider this, what if it's really nasty and you have to re-image or reload from scratch? With a new install and patching and such, I can see you spending an entire day at it, where more Pro paid users wouldn't have that problem. They would most likely be up and running again in 15 or 20 min.

It's 40$ or its 5 hrs of frustration if you are a freebie user. Sooner or later it is going to bite you.

My time is worth a whole hell of a lot more than 40$ or even the 100$ that you keep laughing at me over.

Maybe that is really it.

One thing I like about using Symantec is their online knowledge base. I remember many problems with the Norton AV (2001-2003) installer that I was able to quickly remedy manually by looking at their help site, no phone call at all. I am big user of free software, both closed and open source, but it is really nice having dedicated support to a specific product and that to me is worth the fee.

Another example is Adobe Acrobat. It is greatly superior than the other PDF editors/creators that "comply" with the PDF standard. I know for a fact that Adobe also hand tunes some of the x86 assembly to make their programs fast.

Is there any new stuff out there?

What do you guys use?

I don't use a running AV but browse with firefox behind a router

If a computer is suspected to have problems I run malwarebytes followed by a trial version scan of TrendMicro Antivirus, and then uninstall the TrendMicro. Malware bytes detects spyware/malware and Trend Micro will detect viruses. They serve different purposes and need both to be run to ensure a clean system.

AVOID McAfee and Norton. They are nothing but bloat. They will use too much RAM in the background. BitDefender firewall is too intrusive. If you want a professional + simple AV use Symantec Corporate Antivirus, if you want the most likely to find and fix your virus use Trend Micro. I found that it detects more viruses then competition. Now 'free' I have no idea. I found that free are very unlikely to detect newer viruses. But if you must go free, just use TrendMicro Housecalls. It runs in your browser (load it up with IE), perform scan, feel safe.

I maintain a few web servers and 30+ PCs.

It should also be pointed out that searching the net for random antivirus/antispyware applications will most likely result in you actually installing intrusive adware on your PC.

I use the corporate version of norton and it's no where near as bloated as the commercial version but I also use malware bytes and superantispyware as needed.

Next time something comes up I shall perform a head to head threat detection fight. We will see who is greater then who!

Right now as a Texas Tech student we get to use Symantec Corporate client on a personal computer. I agree with Hypnotoad, the corporate version is lightweight and is quite intelligent. I disable the GUI because I never access it and that saves me a few resources.

The last time I used it it cleaned the virus but the virus had done to much damage and I had to wipe the pc and reload.

why not just get a mac ?

This is funny because it appears you are saying mac's are immune to viruses, when we all know that isn't near the truth at all.

Viruses are uncommon for Macs to get, that is true. It's not viruses that are the problem for Macs though. It is malware from installing software, that is the problem for most Mac users.

That means it's still a good idea to get an Anti-Virus program for your Mac which covers malware.

In this case "frequently" is obviously being used as a synonym for "constantly"...
