Something Rampage does not seem to grasp is...those who work in IT, whether the top dog or the one that does most of the software stuff and not get paid as the top dog, usually get all of the PAID stuff...for FREE.

All these years I have only paid once for an antivirus program and have only paid for windows 95 when I got my first computer. After that I have got all of my OS for free, all my antivirus programs for free all MS word for free and many other programs for free. Part of the perks of working with IT is the company pays for it and we are tech savy enough to make copies and use it for ourselves.

However you could go download the full paid software from a P2P program or a warez site...just better hope you get it installed without getting a virus from doing it that way.:laugh2:

As a few others have said...if you use symantec, the corporate version is pretty good and not as bloated and I would NEVER use a system suite program because normally they are way too bloated.

Now as far as free ones for someone at home...avg will work or a few other freebies you can download.

I'm not the head IT guy...I just do all the software without the pay. I get stuck doing all the installs and swapping HDs, MoBos and all of the grunt stuff. But the head guy knows so it is all on him...that's right officer it was his fault.:D

With that said, we have not ordered anything new for some time...so no new programs for me in some time.

Stay away from AVG, they got bought out by Norton and are going downhill fast.

Microsoft actually makes an effective and free all in one antivirus/antimalware program now... it's called Security Essentials. I'd recommend it if you're looking for free realtime protection that runs lean.

But yes....if your looking for a solid antivirus.....best bet is too buy one....and hopefully get one that doesnt bog down ur system....some of them out there are real pigs :)

Why not just invest in a legit, properly supported and constantly updated Virus Protection suit?

I've used ZoneAlarm for years and most recently Malwarebytes, both of which are free, and neither have let me down. I live by the personal belief that computers don't get viruses, stupid people do.

The problem that I've always had with professional anti-virus suites is everyone I've dealt with is a bloated behemoth of a program that attaches itself to every single process you have running, even the basic system services. What you end up with is a bogged down PC with 500% more memory consumption than normal. It's so funny and ironic how programs like McAfee and Norton hijack and clog up your computer the same way malware does while convincing people it's protecting them.

My mom was complaining to me how her laptop was running so slow given its fairly new condition so I went and had a look at it. I see the McAfee icon in the system tray and immediately narrow down the possible causes. I pull McAfee off the system and immediately the difference is night day. I then install Malwarebytes and proceed to detect 20 pieces of malware McAfee missed, several of which were left by McAfee because it fubared the registry so bad.

Anti-Virus suites, like a lot of things computer related, rely on the fact that the majority of people are ignorant when it comes to technology in order to be successful.

Unless E-machines have changed a great deal...your problem is you have an E machine.

At one time they were possibly the worst computer one could by with some of the worst support if you got any support at all.

How odd. I was thinking the same exact thing when I scrolled down and saw your post.

E-Machines are some of the cheapest out there but are some of the worst operating PC's around.

Friends who had these machines could never get support on them ever.

My dad uses 2 on his anchor line in shallow bays when we are fishing. Have you ever tried pulling 2 E-Machines up from 30 fathoms?

You should see my Popeye arms. :p:

Right now as a Texas Tech student we get to use Symantec Corporate client on a personal computer. I agree with Hypnotoad, the corporate version is lightweight and is quite intelligent. I disable the GUI because I never access it and that saves me a few resources.

um come again, why wasnt i aware of this, and how do i get it?

You should contact your school's IT dept.

As a perpetual (it seems) UH student, I got to download a McAfee license for free. So I have it on all my PCs.

Someone mentioned earlier that it might not be the right type of memory. That could possibly be the problem but I would think that if that were the case it would only be if it is the kind of memory (brain cramp on my part for not thinking of the name) that has to have two sticks of equal amount.

Normally if it was two completely different types of memory it would not work at all unless the first good stick is working but the other is not.

When you go in and do the my computer and properties I have to imagine it would give you the total memory so you would know if both sticks were working or not.

Could be that the memory stick is the right one but either the stick is bad or the slot one the mobo that you put the memory in is bad OR maybe the memory is not put into the slot all the way and you might want to open it up and make sure it is locked into place.

Other than that it could be a software issue where something is hogging the memory.

my hog is the AVG I installed there new 9 version and I got a email from them saying I needed more memory to even run it

let me tell you I did that - I started it - with both sticks - no worky shuts down the puter - pulled the new stick out worked just fine with the old one - so I put the new stick in worked for about ten minutes then shut down again

aw well I will take over to this guy I know an let them look at it - just that dang I hate paying that much money

I figure one thing out tho the memory sticks have to be the same size - I just need to find the right sticks

Check the speed of the ram.
Check the compatibility of the ram with your motherboard. Some motherboards may not support certain speeds, capacities, manufacturers, etc.

Check if the new ram you inserted is burnt or not.

Did you swap the old ram back to see what happens?

Wait how many ram slots do you have, and are the ram you are inserting running at the same speed and capacity? Are they both DDR?(or ddr2, or ddr3).
