Front Office Unsuccessful with Player Pay Cuts

Can anybody add insight into our Front Office negotiations with players with regards to pay cuts? The Front Office struggles with Pay Cuts (Dan Conner) while other Teams thrive (Giants - Cory Webster, Philly - Vick, Kansas City- Jackson, etc.). Please note that some current players would be valuable Role Players on our Team with a cut in Pay. Furthermore, last year Terence Newman played for Cincy on a 1 year minimum Contract. Newman could had assisted us from a Depth standpoing while playing for the minimum if Dallas negotiated a Pay Cut. What gives? Please do not make this a Jerry Jones bashing thread.

Good thread, was wondering this same thing. Don't think the Conner sitution is settled yet but maybe JJ is just generous/loyal on his word to a fault. Probably not but none the less, wish he was my uncle or something! :)

Newman had an 825K salary with an 825K cap hit last year as a veteran minimum. The team was looking to go cheaper for their depth, and were able to sign Sterling Moore for half of that.

Connor will take a discount or he'll be gone.

Personally, I'm not sure he's suited for Kiffen's scheme anyway.

You want people to address how our team is managed and not talk about Jerry Jones?

Do you mean that was what Newman's cap hit and salary was at Cincy?

I think his cap hit in Dallas would have been ten times that.

I also think the majority of his income last year while in Cincy was from Dallas.

I am saying that Dallas did not want to spend 825K on a #4 corner

Ahh

So not Newman, but some other guy.

In the end, I really liked the Sterling Moore addition.

When the team consistently over-values their players, eventually, those players start believing the hype.

I don't think that was the case. Being asked to take that compared to what he was making and told you're no longer in consideration for a starting role isn't something Newman would be willing to accept from Dallas.

Taking the best offer available on the FA market (even if it's for the same amount of money) is different than accepting a pay or role cut.

Plus dallas still paid him millions while he was in Cincy last year.

The Giants are currently restructuring Corey Webster's contract rather than cut him despite the fact that he was way overpaid for his production last year. Ultimately, I don't give a crap about what other franchises do. I care about finding value in this franchise. If they think Connor can negotiate down to a $1 million salary and be a base caliber starter as a strong side 4-3 LB in this system, that would be tremendous value and one less position that has to have resources allocated to.

A little premature at this point.

this. plus, every player situation is different. you can't really use those situations to compare to what the cowboys are doing/trying to do.

Situations are completely different.

Michael Vick knew he was not going to get a new deal for anywhere near the money he was going to get by staying in Philly. So he took a lower deal.

Terrance Newman had no reason to stay with Dallas....he wasn't going to have a starting role, most likely not even the nickle corner. I don't think Dallas even really made him any kind of restructure offer to him.

Connor turned down less money to come to us, I am pretty sure the Eagles offered him more. So he feels like he is owed the money by Dallas and probably feels he can get another deal somewhere else for similar money. Might as well play hardball with Dallas.

The Giants also released Bradshaw, Canty, and Boley after being unsuccessful on restructures this offseason.

The Eagles will do the same with Nnmadi and have already done so with Cullen Jenkins.

No team is doing any of this perfectly.

I totally agree that no team has perfected the art of Pay Cuts. I just cannot remember the last time Dallas pulled off a "significant" Pay Cut to a Player. I just used Newman as an example for Depth on the Cheap.

Yes, but they aren't the Cowboys. I seem to remember the Eagles dream team fell apart and the coach go fired for it. Giants laid an egg. NO pooped its pants. Yada.

Most players simply will not take a pay cut for the team they are under contract to. It's just the principle of it and most probably think they can make more on the open market so they say go ahead and cut me. A player has to really want to be with that team to take a pay cut.
