Is Cowboys' DeMarco Murray one of NFL's best backs?

Dallas Cowboys running back Demarco Murray is a stud. In an eight game span — counting last season — he rushed for 780 yards and seven touchdowns. So while Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy were busy arguing about who was the best back in the country, Murray was out there performing.

But don’t expect him to enter his own name in the discussion. Someone else will have to nominate him.

“I don’t worry about that stuff,” Murray said, via ESPN.com. “I never have, never will. I know what I can do. I have a lot of confidence in myself and those are some great running backs, but I definitely think I can handle a little bit of everything. So it’s something I don’t really get caught up in too much.”

Truthfully, he shouldn’t get caught up in that, because he’s not in the discussion yet. Sure, he’s had a good eight weeks, as Tim MacMahon pointed out, but he has stay on the field for most or all of one season. It’s hard measure using stats carried between seasons.

When he’s on the field, he’s probably a Top 5 back. He may not have the reputation of Peterson, Lynch, Jamal Charles and Marshawn Lynch but he’s in their echelon of skill and talent. His health is what drops him from the discussion.

And he’s not the best.

He’ll have to play all 16 games to be considered. He’s off to a good start, but it will be about how he finishes in the marathon of a NFL season.

Remember the day when being a great RB was almost as important as being a great QB?

Today we have monumental arguments about the proper placement of QBs within the 'Top 10' QB list and threads can run into 1000s of posts on the topic.

Seem to me that someone could say Murray is Top 5, Top 10, or Top 20 and I just wouldn't have much feeling or real care one way or another.

I think it's a testament to how far the overall value of individual RBs has fallen in the NFL. Heck, they don't even get drafted in the 1st round anymore.

All things are cyclical in this game.

Murray runs behind this Star Wall and posts 1100 plus yards, the bidding for him will be intense.

So which actually denotes the importance of a running back?

The draft, or the paycheck?

Each requires special applications and makes a carte blanche hard to arrive at...lol.

I think Murray is a really good to possibly great running back. But, I can't see us paying him much and that being a good move. RB's are too prone to get injured and the league has completely devalued the position (they hardly get drafted in the 1st round anymore). So you can always find a good alternative to Murray at a much cheaper price tag.

It's one of the things I like that Jim Harbaugh has done...get quality, tough RB's in the draft for relatively cheap value. It helps put a stop to these 'amoeba defenses' and those defenses where the pass rushers just pin their ears back every down without paying much care to sustaining their gap control.

The problem that stumps the toe here, is that positional averages are still at a higher level and knocking that down won't be an easy battle with the Player's Union.

Lynch makes a big difference in Seattle, in fact he completes the balanced attack they have going on over there offensively. If we are going to start winning with any consistency Murray is going to need his reps, Especially inside the 10....

It amazes me how nonchalantly people say RBS are easy to replace. Yea, because Murray is just another Top 10 RB to wear the Star since Emmitt left town. We are batting 1.000 when it comes to grabbing complete backs huh?

Pay this man and get it over with. Holding I jury against him is counterproductive when the franchise has shown in the recent past to invest in injury prone players. ROMO AND LEE ring a bell? Running backs are just as easily replaced as injury prone, rookie mistake making, gunslinging QB?

Not yet, given Romo's propensity to sling the ball.
But, given the chance, he can be.

This franchise had one season with a back with 1000 yards between Emmitt Smith and Murray doing it last year.

It's hilarious how so many people think good backs are a dime a dozen. Maybe it's true for other franchises, but not this one. Pay that man his money.

Different time and age.. Plus Bo had a short career. Which is another reason you don't pay A
RBs. Injuries

I'm afraid you have proven nothing. All that was done in that statement was to state a point of bias and reinforce without consideration of what was added to conversation.

No, one can't just up and say we no longer value running backs, when there is a set amount for declaring them a franchise tag. Those are an average involving top salaries. Know what that is for a running back?

This is what the current franchise tags look like:

Quarterback$16,912,000
Offensive Linemen (includes Offensive Tackle, Offensive Guard, Center)$11,654,000
Wide Receiver$12,312,000
Running Back (includes all Fullbacks and Halfbacks) $9,540,000
Tight End $7,035,000
Defensive End$13,116,000
Defensive Tackle $9,654,000
Linebacker$11,455,000
Cornerback$11,834,000
Safety $8,433,000
Kicker or Punter $3,556,000

No, there is a level that is sustained for levels of production. A team just won't retain services of a quality running back, if basic levels aren't respected. And no, availability of another 2nd or 3rd round draft slot does not guarantee an equal trade of in talent, experience, and ability to pass block, run, and be a receiver.

One lives in a make believe world if he is buying into it's just a matter of getting a young and just drafted player.

Look right now at Tennessee's highly valued running back, Bishop Sankey, and he isn't just plugging in and equaling a Demarco Murray.

Consider a better argument than a pie in the sky hypothetical. Things just don't work out that easy...or Manziel would be pushing aside considerations of an Andy Dalton, Ben Roethlisberger, or even a Josh McCown.

Sorry, a whiz kid solution just doesn't work in what was described as the new order of the NFL.
