Perhaps. But with the OL we have I think we can still do well with an average back. I don't think that defenses are going to dedicate as many resources to covering Murray as they would to covering Dez, and that alone could open up more opportunities for the offense.

Although, if we actually used Murray like we use Dez, then maybe the defensive focus shifts to Murray. But I just can't see that happening with this staff.

But if we sign Dez to the kind of contract that he's looking for, we've pretty much used most of our resources on him, Romo and Tyron. We'd never be able to keep Frederick, Martin, etc.

Not to mention, I can't remember the last time a Super Bowl winning team was built through their #1 receiver. It's certainly a nice luxury to have, but that's just what it is - a luxury. Calvin Johnson is undoubtedly the best WR in the game today and he's never been on a team that's made it past the first round of the playoffs.

The most recently successful teams have been built through their running game and defense (Giants, Seahawks, Steelers, etc.) and if we throw a fat contract at Dez, we have no money to spread around to build a team.

I have to hit the swing with Murray group:

The Dallas Cowboys drafted DeMarco Murray to be a complementary back.

But since they became a zone-running team last year, the Cowboys have stopped counting his carries and started counting their blessings.
“I think through his development, his maturation process, he’s become that [featured] guy,” Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown said. “I think he embraces that role. So far, so good. Hopefully we can continue to give him the ball, and he can stay healthy, and we’ll have something special.”

Murray had his eighth career 100-yard game last week, his third in the past five games, as he rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries against the San Francisco 49ers. He also caught three passes for 25 yards.

In his past six games, dating to Thanksgiving Day, Murray has averaged 22.7 touches for an average of 125.2 total yards...
