A rookie set to return

The beaten-up Cowboys rookie class has a player back on the field. Inside linebacker Jason Williams returned to practice Wednesday and made it through the whole thing. He could get some playing time Sunday at Denver on special teams.

Williams suffered a high ankle sprain in the third preseason game against the 49ers. He was expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

"He's come back a lot sooner from the high ankle sprain than we thought he would and did pretty well today," Phillips said.

That's good news for Dallas! I hope he learns the defense well enough to snatch playing time away from Barbie eventually... Judging by Carpenters tackling efforts Monday, it won't be too hard.

Excellent news! I'm looking forwad to seeing what this kid can do.
I agree, Barbie is probably a bit nervous right about now.

I hope at least after the bye, Jason will have replaced Barbie

I think we all hope that...but I doubt it does.

Looks like he could possibly play this weekend. I'm guessing that he'll (Carpenter) start losing some snaps gradually, I bet by Turkey Day Williams might have his job entirely:

Outside linebacker Curtis Johnson reinjured his hamstring and did not practice Wednesday. Safety Mike Hamlin (wrist) still is out, and running back Felix Jones (left knee) did not practice.

Running back Marion Barber (left quadriceps) was limited in practice, but he did participate in some team work. Left tackle Flozell Adams (shoulder), outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware (neck strain) and inside linebacker Jason Williams (high ankle sprain) fully participated. Williams, a third-round draft choice, could make his regular-season debut this week.

It should be interesting to see how he progresses this year.

I think he is already a better blitzer than Bobby Carp.

I wish Hodge could've stayed healthy too.

Yep, me too. Hodge would have been good depth and a real special teams demon.

I think had JW not gotten hurt he may have beaten out Carp by now. He was really coming on in TC and preseason.

I hope he gets a few snaps and makes one big play, he will be haled as the next Ray Lewis and the hate for Barbie will escalate to Roy Williams to the power of TO standards. It will need its own sub forum. Good times

Barbie's been pretty awful. Like everyone else, I want him replaced ASAP.
However, I understand that learning all of the different responsibilities of the nickel LB and inside LB may take some time. Hopefully, Williams can help us out on special teams (which he should be able to do immediately) and occasionally blitzing in some nickel packages at first if he cannot completely take over Barbie's spot right away. I hope he'll be ready to make some significant contributions by the time we return from the bye. He has unique speed and explosion from the LB position, which we caught a glimpse of in preseason (and he showed in college). We should be able to utilize those attributes fairly quickly on special teams and certain blitzes.

Realistically hopefully sometime b/t the bye week and Thanksgiving Williams will be able to contribute in the nickel package.

The more teams get film on Barbie taking bad angles and tip-toeing near the LOS, the more opposing teams will use their Nickel offense and actually run the ball in that package.

In the immediate future Brooking will start playing more in the nickel.

Wow, really? I hope we aren't rushing him back to the point he could re-injure it, but I can't see why we would be since he'll just play special teams at first and we aren't exactly hurting there.

Maybe he's just one of those really fast healers. Some guys are like that. I remember in college we had a defensive end named Wayne Martin who went on to play for the Saints. He had a couple of injures that normally would keep guys our four to five weeks and he'd only miss a game or two. The doctors said it wasn't even that he was especially tough, it was that his body literally healed faster that most people's.

Anyway, great news. The faster he can get acclimated to the speed of the game, the faster he can put Bobby on the bench.

Or, with the roster crunch we're going to have when all these guys get well, off the team. Seriously.
